Venice Snapper

We finally got out last weekend. Friday morning we got set up in about 150 feet of water and found red snapper heaven. As soon as we'd make the bottom we'd either hook a fish or loose bait. It was cool and overcast and in about 60 minutes we caught our limit(4x4 over 16") and released about the same # of undersized fish. (We are still releasing air from the swim bladders-you guys do that?). I had a 20 min fight with what turned out to be a jack crevelle. He was about 35# but disappointingly not good to eat.He survived the release but I was just about done for the day. I forgot how much easier big tackle and a fighting belt make it. We then made a big loop about 30 miles off shore and had just found some blue water south of Cognac when thunderstorms forced us up the river.That's a very active weather area and we watched as several bubbled up and nearly surrounded us.We ended up getting a free boat wash-but thank God the lightning was a safe distance away.Back at the dock we feasted on tai sashimi and prepared for fishing Saturday. BTW David T-thought we heard someone talking to "Fish Stix"-tried to call you but we weren't sure if we were nearby or not. Saturday we did the opposite heading out South pass looking for blue water.Saw and fished a few pods of Tuna but couldn't get a hook up. Never really found good water so we tracked west and tried the rigs again. Caught a few mangrove snapper and a lemon fish (aka cobia,ling). Here's what was left after 2 nights of feasting. nice haul....what kind of rig and bait do you use for snapper? I am going out tomorrow we usually catch our snapper at night so we are going to pull an all nighter. Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC

We use an egg sinker on top of a large hook(some use circle hooks but we do better with the straight type) and cut poagies. Never tried at night-guess that would be a lot cooler.

we do the same at night i put my spreaders on and put out chum it brings the snapper to the boat.it is cooler at night and around here the snapper bite is better. Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC

Sorry Tim-I typoed- we have never tried at night-but you make it sound like something to try.
