Windlass Install with Pulpit

Post by BottomLine »

Getting back to my long-delayed windlass installation. For those of you who have a windlass and bow pulpit, did you mount the windlass on top of the pulpit? Any issues with doing so?

Mike, general rule of thumb is to mount it over the deepest part of the anchor well. I don't have a pulpit so I had no problem doing that. Don't really remember the details as it was over 20 years ago. I did reinforce under the deck with 3/4" plywood epoxied in place. Also used a 1/4" aluminum plate so the nuts would not sink into the plywood. Had to buy M8 stainless rod to make my own bolts as the supplied ones were to short.

Al: The deepest part is pretty much under the back of the pulpit. I might be able to move it off the pulpit but would prefer not to.

Mike, if it's that close, I wouldn't worry about it. The anchor well on our boats is so deep it shouldn't be a problem. Unless you intend to put over 600' of rode in there.

Hi Mike,
I have an 86 Sportfish with with a pulpit & windlass.
Both were added at the same time about 15 years ago.
I believe it is mounted on the pulpit if memory serves me correctly.
I will try to get some pictures & measurements next weekend
when I get down there (hopefully).
They were both great additions.

Hello all,

I'm about to install a new windlass on top of the pulpit.
Would it possible to elaborate on the concerns you have of such installation?
I understand that the pulpit just adds additional thickness between the top and the bottom parts of the windlass. Do I miss something?

thanks in advance!

Hi fanis,
I think the concern on this thread is placement of the windlass so that the anchor line will
run in and out smoothly with no jamming.
My installation has Anchor to chain to rope.
The chain to rope splice does not retrieve as smoothly as I would like.
Occasionally it will jam at the splice point when going through the deck back in to the rope locker.

This is a link to the windlass that I have.
There is a lot of good info at this link.

Good luck with your installation.

Hi Gerard,

thanks for the prompt feedback.

Still, I believe this concern is independent to the pulpit, unless the pulpit ends in between the desired position, leading the windlass to be half on the pulpit and half out of it. In this case, I would suggest to glue an additional peace of something (could be ertalon) with the same thickness of the pulpit, so that the windlass is aligned horizontally.

PS: I'm guessing most of us have 8mm chain. It is quite strange for our seas (Greece), to have combination of chain and rope in such heavy boats. How many meters of chain we can host (or you usually have, apart from the rope) ? I see that this compartment is quite limited. Ideally I would like to have 100meters of 8mm chain, but I really doubt if this is feasible.

regards,
fanis

Yes,
I think the windlass should be mounted on the same plane as the pulpit / roller assembly.
The link shows the typical setup (in our area) 3M of chain (6/7mm) spliced to 38M of rope,
I presume for weight & space considerations which helps given the small rope locker.
Cheers!
