Thinking of getting a windlass for my '78 FBC. Has anyone devised a way to get a shorter run of cable from a battery to the windlass, e.g. putting a battery forward in the bilge somewhere, under the V berth?

Re: Shorter Run of Cables for Windlass
Hi Mike,
There used to be a kit that had the 14/3 gauge for the switch to solenoid with the crimps. Kit also had 36' each of black & red 1 gauge cable. I think I had about 1' left over after installation. This was with a direct shot right down the middle of the boat.
If you mount a battery in the vee berth, I recommend an AGM battery so you don't get the hydrogen outgassing under your mattress.
Good Luck

I installed mine a few years ago. Ran the cable down the starboard side all the way back to the battery. Mounted the breaker back near the batteries. The switch went in the V birth behind the sliding door.

Ditto from Capt. Tony. I lucked out though and my cables were pre-installed by the factory and just taped off. I think that I just had to run a duplex wire from the helm switch to the locker.

Correct Joe. Forgot to mention the helm switch which was an easy run.
