Need Cummins ?

Post by Rick »

I looked at an ugly 29' Blackfin Combi the other day for a friend. Boat was beat up with mold and corrosion everywhere. Owner said it'll goto the first guy that gives him $14K. BUT, it had a pair of Cummins 6bta's that someone at the yard were still running fairly well. They've got 4,000 hours on them and the guy standing there said they smoke a lot when first started (doesn't the Bosch fuel pumps help that problem ?), but he used the boat last summer and like I said, they still run. It obviously got my wheels turning but that would be too big of a project for me to get them into my boat. I have some pic's if anyone is interested. Skip it. Its got the old (like really old) after coolers that are welded. That means there's no way to pull them apart and inspect/clean them (these are probably $2K each). Also, it looks like its a CPL 0970 (which is what I have), which means it has nippondenso fuel pumps. Its not really possible to change them (plus a single fuel pump is probably $3K-plus). That being said, there's no glow plugs on that engine (thus the smoke). Block heaters would help that, unless of course the after coolers are in really bad shape (but how would you know?).

Thanks Doug - It looked like a can of worms but you couldn't ignore the initial investment. I think I could have offered him $10K and would have walked away with two engines that are worth roughly $25K each remanned. But it would probably take at least $10K per engine to get them up to snuff. And yes, I've heard the Bosch fuel pumps are upwards of $5K each. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
