looking at used 33 SF 1987

Post by mudskipper »

I really just want a weekend apartment, but when I saw the 33 with the for sale sign it got my curiosity up. Nice bit of goodies. But it has big honker gas 454 mercs. If you just go out of your slip to do some fluke fishing now an then at 8 knots what will it burn and can you go at plotzing speed? I know this style of boat is planning hull. What happens if you run it like a displacement boat? going to meet broker in a few days. HOW MUCH GUYS?

What year boat is it. It probably has flo scan gauges that will show the fuel burn at different RPMs

It doesn't hold 300 gallons for nothing ! Depending on which 454 you've got (Carb or F.I.) you'd probably burn about 10 to 15 gallons an hour doing 8 knots. Remember, you still have to fill those cylinders. The hull performs fine at 8 knots but it might get a little boring unless your tuna fishing. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Welcome to our online sandbox! I am not the best one here to talk about gassers, but I am sure you will get some good info as soon as some of the other regs here read you post. Where are you located, and where is the boat you are referring to? Sometimes someone here has seen or heard about the boat you are interested in and can offer some specific info. With this economy boat prices are so depressed you should take your time and look at several before you make up your mind. Gas vs diesel is always a subject for debate, with fuel costs so high today and who knows what they will be in the future? Design changes over the years have changed the interior and the flybridge of our boats, and certainly those on the market vary a lot as to condition. Get some sense of what is available in your area and don't be afraid to ask specific questions here. Boat buying is both a rational and an emotional process for most of us, and the more info you can gather about what is in your geographical and financial range the less emotional and the more rational your decision making process will be. Looking at boats for sale can take some time and maybe even a little money, but in the end if you do buy a boat you will have some comfort in knowing you made a rational decision. (Assuming the decision to buy any boat can ever be considered "rational"!) Before I would spend any time in negotiations with any prospective seller or broker I would locate a good marine surveyor who I feel comfortable with, and pick his brains about what other similar boats he has seen locally, as well as what he thinks about a specific boat you are interested in. Looking at different boats is also fun! I spent over a year looking at boats and refining my requirements before I bought mine. One final word.. something I was told when I started looking at Bertrams... "When you buy a Bertram.. nobody ever asks you why!" Welcome aboard!

The boat I am interested in is in Brielle N.J.Name is Jeric Sea it is a 1987. I don't know if it has original fiberglass tanks yet. I understand at that year fiberglass with ethanol gas is O.K.? Thanks for your input.Mudskipper

Hey Frank, that is funny that you were told that. Did you ever read the "Purpose" statement I wrote when I first started the site? Here is the link... http://www.bertram33.com/purpose.html I basically say the same thing in the very first sentence. [:)]

David... The friend who told that to me had owned several Bertrams, and was the one who first told me about this site. I bet he read the above statement here and then relayed it to me. I have just lifted a statement from a poster on the B31 forum, which I printed and have stuck on the bulkhead of my main cabin.. to read while I am feverishly working to bring "Phoenix" back to her rightful position in the yacht world... "Owning one of these is about pride in ownership. It is about people who love fine boats. If you haven't fallen in love with her, go buy a lesser breed. Don't disgrace the Gods of the Sea by buying and then neglecting one of these classics" by David Pascoe.. yacht surveyor and author
