When repowering from 454s to diesel was it necessary to replace shafts and struts, etc to a larger diameter?

Depends on the engines you use and the gear reduction. You will have 1/38" shafts on your boat. That will work in theory with the engines we're talking about with a ratio of about 1.5 to 1. However considering the age of your boat, if the shafts are original or in any way questionable, I would change at least to new Aquamet 22's and it would be a fairly simple upgrade to 1.5" using a thinner cutless bearing or boring the sruts. Not sure about your stuffing boxes on that year boat.
