Gel Coat

Post by Rick »

I've got a couple of scratches in the hull that I want to repair this Spring. I've heard that you can buy the Gel Coat paint from Bertram but these scratches are maybe 2 - 3' long combined. So I don't want to buy a lot....does anyone have some left over they want to sell ? Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Rick, I've got some pretty thick stuff that would be good for squeegeeing into a scratch . Is this what you had in mind?

Frank, I was going to go through the process of sanding, filling and gel coating. It's a first for me so if you have something that will do that process in one step, I'd definitely take a look. What is it ? Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Rick, It depends how deep and long the scratches are. If they aren't too bad you can fold a piece of 80 grit, run it through the crack to clean up the edges, then use this thick paste to fill the crack. Then after it cures, block it down with sand paper , starting at about 320 , finish with 1000 or 1500, then buff. You have to be careful not to sand through the existing gelcoat . If you do sand though you will need to spot it in, which is what you plan to do any way. It does take a little finesse but not that bad.

Frank, I'll give it a shot. One scratch is pretty bad, the other not that bad. Guess it depends on how bad is bad ? But I'll give this a shot....is it the "Fix-it" stuff ? Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Not the "fixit" stuff. It's some thick stuff I had in the bottom of a gallon can. Perfect for those type of jobs and it matches pretty well.

Sorry for delay, just got back form a trip. Yeah, sounds like the kind of fill I need, especially if it matches. When is a good time to pick it up ? Tell you what, I'll give your cell phone a call this week. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
