Coast Guard at it again

Today's Asbury Park Press has a few great shots of the Coast Guard running out the Manasquan NJ inlet on its way to help a sailboater. That is the same inlet that Mike's photo of Shot n' Beer is seen running in better weather. They are the greatest in my book.

That 47' (all aluminum) was launched to replace the 40's that I believe have now all been retired. My brother is a retired Captain (30 years) from the Coast Guard. His last station was Juneau Alaska and we visited him there back in 2003. While there we got a full tour of one of these 47's. They are incredible inside and streamlined purely for search and rescue ... fast too! Trivia: Many of you probably already know this, but for all CG boats under 100', the first two numbers on their hull represent the vessels length. So the hull number on this 47 might read 470965, where the 47 represents the length. You see this on the 40's, 47's, 82's and 95's, etc.

The Dunlop boys and I toured a 47 a couple of years ago when the Newburyport station held an open house. Brian is correct when he says they're purely for S&R. There wasn't even a small fridge for the crew to put snacks or even a couple of bottles of water. Pretty cool stuff though.

I had a chance to get aboard a USCG 47' which had recently been retired and look around.. as said above.. it is all business. Each seat had a race car type harness to keep everyone in their seats.. helmets for each seat, no paint anywhere, all what appeared to be sandblasted aluminum (inside and out), and extrtemely rugged. What really impressed me was how clean it was.. it was spotless inside and out. Twin Detroit diesels, and no signs of any sound suppressing material. Pure 100% functionality. Charleston SeaTow had bought the boat and was going to use it for recoveries. It would be a blast to have access to it! Probably able to handle "Bertram weather" without batting an eye!
