Stress Cracks in Bow and below waterline????
Stress Cracks in Bow and below waterline????
I know that this has probably been discussed before, but I would like to know if you guys have seen it and have gotten any professional opinions from surveyors, glassmen etc... about these stress cracks in the bow, above and below the waterline. Also has anyone been living with these cracks at the presently? BTW I have read the Pascoe article! hi I have 5 or 6 stress cracks in the bow on both sides (20 inch long) above water line,on my 33 sportfish. and i 've seen a lot of on bertram 38 and 46 Not a big problem, only cosmetic, because there is no frame above water line , and the panel is going to flex in hard sea. Below water line, it' s better to repair before water intrusion, and blisters; the bottom is well framed, so if it is a short one, grind and epoxy, but if they are several long stress crack, there could be a problem of stringer, or delamination
I have looked in the forward compartment and have not seen any visual signs of delamiation and all glass is green in color. BTW I am not looking to make this a canyon runner, the ocasional shark trip, some inshore bluefin/cod fishing would be the extent of the offshore action. However I don't want this to come back and bite me in the ass either! Jeff Thank God it's a Bertram

Jeff, I had 3 of the FBCs surveyed prior to the one I ended up buying. Two had some stress cracks in the bow area above the waterline. According to my surveyer, they were not serious. Kind of , if you buy the boat, fix them when you get around to it. If one of the tabs up there is popped loose, I would fix it right away. Below the waterline, I would say the boat had seen some pretty heavy pounding. I didn't buy either of those boats for other reasons. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. I have one on each side a couple feet above the waterline. You can't notice them when the boat is in the water, only on the hard looking up at it. Everyone has told me they are no big deal so far. One fiberglass guy I know pretty well looked at it and suggested I wait until they progress as they are hard to see other than at the right angle and might come right back.

The one I am looking at has 2 areas of about 16"x8" and couple of strays at the waterline or below I know that it is hard to see but the areas have been highlighted

I couln't believe that a stress crack would develop there as well, but the previous surveyor?, and I use the term surveyor lightly, it also turns out I knew of this guy and well? I wouln't put much creedence in his opinions, he had apparantly scratched away the bottom paint on the center spot and there was somesort of "gelcoat" crack there. I think that this Bertram 33FBC should do the trick for my Montauk "Harbor Hopping" for SE of block, Coxes and out to the 40 fathom fingers. I don't believe in trying to make this boat do something that it should not be doing. I'll leave that to the more capable 35Bs hehe!! Quite honestly after going West Coast longrage fishing on the Excel east coast canyon tunafishing just isn't the same anymore DEC 26-Jan 5 09 6 over 300, biggest 365, 25 from 200-300 and 45 from 150-200 best big fish trip ever on the Excel
