New Salon Door
New Salon Door
Thanks to the economy I found myself with a little more time on my hand so I decided to hang the new salon door I purchased during my repower (the fall of 2008). I had got it from sams marine as a surplus but it's an Aluminum2000 door. It was a tedious process as I had to cut the lower door sill back and then notch the top to get it to sit flush and since the new door was about 4 inches narrower I had to close in the slides of the door sill and bring them out to meet the flange of the new door. Then there was the fairing and sanding which went really well using Quickfair from Silvertip. I choose to use the Interlux Perfection in Snow White for paint and that was a little tricky go get the technique, outside temperature just right & I’ve still got one more coat to put on. Unless you look with a critical eye it looks good.

I meant to add that I still need to paint the trim on top and sides. The door swings open to the ladder and can be secured with a tie-tie slipped over the handle. Also, I have a few more picuters at the following url http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm12 ... 5%20Doors/

Thanks Guys, It's funny how long it takes for some simple cosmetic projects... This was kind of a test run to see if I wanted to tackle re-painting the topsides and I think the answer is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some how after doing this small project, $18k for a topside paint job dosen't seem too bad. br, John

Does it leak from the sides, center or botthm? Sounds like you may have an issue with some weather stripping on the sides or bottom. As long as the doors are solid, you can fix the rollers and possibly the weather stripping. Before my repower, my doors didn't leak but were tough to open at times and we were just done with dealing with them. To take the doors off, I removed the screws from the bottom plate and slid the plate and bottom of the doors out and then they dropped out from the top. To re-install, I grabbed a couple of friends, one to hold each of the doors and align at the top while I aligned at the bottom and slid the plate on. I'm not sure if there are other or easier ways to do it?? My lower door frame was damaged during my repower in 07/08 (a long story in itself) I had purchased the replacement, but didn't install due to not enough time left and wanting to get the boat out of the yard and home. So it wasn't until I was laid-off last spring that I had the time to fit the new door. It was a good bit of work, but I had to repair the bulkhead and bottom door sil and then paint everything.
