Diesel conversion
Diesel conversion
Has anyone converted a gas 33 convertible to diesel. I know instruments,electrical,return lines.What about exaust,shafts and anything else.It is a 1989 and I'm thinking Yanmar.[:)][?] Thanks, rick33
Rick, Welcome aboard. Many of us have performed this conversion. Use the search function in the upper right hand corner and you will see many threads on the topic. Most of the conversions have been done with Cummins B series (300-370hp) and are very happy with their "new" boats. A couple of guys have done Yanmars (315+370hp) and are equally as happy. Do you already own the boat?

Rick, I just completed converting mine to Cummins. I used 6" exhaust , #8 aeroquip fuel feed and #6 return lines, @" water intakes , VDO guages etc. etc. Not sure what the rquirements are for Yanmar but I could give a list of parts required or supply them to you for cheaper than you can buy them elsewhere if you are interested. Besides the cost of the engines and gears, the extras cost about 5 -6K.

Rick, From having gone through this last year, I'd offer that if you don't already own a gas boat there's almost no reason to buy one with the intention of converting. There's plenty of good diesel boats for sale, both original and converted. My take on repowering: Unless you have the major hook up on parts and labor, I'd expect it to cost $20k or more, in additon to the cost of the motors and gears. Heck I've got over $2500 in cable/switches just to start my motors and that's not labor to install. I tried to do a lot of the work myself and think I saved some, but with only having evenings and weekends with no other help it was slow. So the yard did more work than I had intended. There's lots of good info on repowers here and the performance you get from the different options. You're in a good position if you don't have a boat already. There are plenty of boats to choose from right now. keep us posted,

John, The only problem is that most of the diesel convertables currently available are original Cats which can be on the slow side. There is one 89 FBC that has Yanmars. Its been listed for a long time. There's also an 86 with Yanmars as well. That's a fairly newer listing. Of course he is flying his ensign from the bow.[:(!][xx(][B)][8] Hope that's not someone from here!
