Battery connection

Post by stevewy »

I have twin gas 454's/330 HP. There are 3 batteries. What is the proper connection sequence? I've looked in my manual and can't find a schematic. I believe I have them connected correctly but would feel better if confirmed by the experts on bertram33.com! Thanks

Steve, We'd need a lot more information. What year boat......SF or FBC.....what type of batteries (8D's?)....do you have a genny and so on. In this case more is more. Chances are someone has a schematic that they could share. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

I too have a doubt on my battery hookup. My 77 fbc also has three batteries and one in the back for the genny and there are battery selector switches all willy nilly. It has 454 pcm's not sure of hp but I believe that my batteries are type 27?, regular sized anyway. A schematic would be great, thank you.

Justin, You and I have the same set-up. There are 3 batteries in the main engine bilge (27s) and a separate battery for the genny in the aft bilge. I believe (but am not sure) all of the original accessories run off of the starboard side. I have a stereo unit that has a large amplifier, so I have that circuit running from the port. Otherwise, I think everything is SB. The center battery is for emergency parallel start only.....at least that's what I think. My boat is a 1978 Flybridge cruiser.

I have a 1989. The way mine was set up was 2 8Ds and no independant battery for the Generator. Although I have new engines and generator, I kept the original battery configuration. There is a on-off switch for each bank plus a separate on-off for the power to the gen set. The generator keeps the Stb battery bank charged while running. There have been no issues the 10 yrs I have owned the boat, so I haven't messed with it. I do have all the wiring schematics for the boat, and there is no option for a third battery. Hey Steve, In my 82 FBC (I think its original) I have 2 8D's in aft engine room between engines. 2 sperate switches mounted on aft engine room bulkhead ( 1 for each 8D). A tranverse mounted genny w/a smaller battery in aft strb genny compartment, w/another battery switch for it. Several years ago I replaced the old built in (mounted on forward engine room bulkhead) charger with a solid state 3 bank charger. Its wired so genny powers new charger to always keep the 2 8D's and genny battery charged, as well as from dockside power. Hope this is clear and helps at all. Ken
