CUMMINS QSB's

Post by sla168 »

Well folks, It's been a while... I am taking the plunge. I am repowering my 87 SF with QSB 380's, Northern Lights Genny and running gear. It will be pricey, but this is THE boat. I just love it. It's going in within a couple of weeks for prep work...wish me luck! Also, anyone out there done this gas to diesel conversion? I have read most of the forums and opinion, just wondering about any significant issues that may come up.

That would be my first choice also. Please keep us informed and take a bunch of pics as you go if you can. I'm with you, for me, this is THE boat. Frank Price

I'm leaning toward the Northern Lights 6.0, I don't know if the sound shield will work though. By the way, I will have an Onan 6.5 with new winding (3 months ago) in great shape. Twin 454's with good compression too if anyone is interested.

sla168. Congrats on your repower...I'm sure many of us here are living vicariously through you. What gear ratio, shaft size, exhaust size, will you be using ????? Do you have the side exhaust set-up, and will it have to be changed(enlarged).???? Will you have to enlarge your raw water pick-ups as well ????? As mentioned previously, we'd all be very interested in your re-power, details of problems encountered and there solutions. Please post pictures when able. When your done, you should have a flying machine !!!! Good luck and congrats again. Ken 1982 33FBC "Blue Chip" w/454 Crusaders Westbrook, Ct.

Hey Doug I a previous post you said: Maybe not. There are guys on this site who are cruising at 27 knots with the 370 cummins. Its not inconceivable that 420hp could do 30 knots. At the very least, now we know that the 3126's will fit. Anyone have any idea what the 3126's way? Any updates on the new props? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA I was wondering who those guys are ??? Thanks Ken 1982 33FBC "Blue Chip" w/454 Crusaders Westbrook, Ct. AIM: skyking4ever

sla168 Thanks for answering my question but I made a mistake. I change the forum an think you have a FBC. The reason I ask the dimensions is because I install a Compact 2800 rpm Next Generation 5.5kw Diesel over the strainers on my FBC. With this change I eliminate some weigth specially in the aft. But I dont think you have the space in that area. David Vila

Wow - what a boat, good luck with the project. What size shafts will you be running with those ? Here's another 454er interested in your gen set. How many hours ?

Hi guys, The shafts are currently 1.5, going to dripless 1.75. The genny is an Onan 6.5kw, running, new stator (rewound recently). I'm located in Pompano Beach Florida and I haven't yet checked the hours on the unit.[:p]

Here's an update: I will be taking pictures (and hopefully posting them) as the project goes along. The genny has no hour meter. I think I'm having the work done privately by a contractor, but I'm waiting on one more estimate from Glasstech. So far, my guy has a good reputation and will be able to keep costs within budget. I'm going with 1 3/4 aquamet (22 or 19) shafts.
