Parts for MG502
Parts for MG502
Hello to all ! My MG502 lossed the oil either through the cooler or the shaft seals and it ran dry for about 20 min. damaging some seals and the disc. I would like to know if anyone has purchased parts for their marine gears and if so could you recomend where to purchase? My unit has Cat numbers on it CAT Model Number 34800 Part Number 3N4601 Serial 709282 but my Bertram owners manual says its a TD MG502, 1.54.:1 For those of you who would like to know the symptoms. Oil loss was just a little oil over a 6 month period so I did not think there was a problem. I would put a cup about every 6 month. When low on oil it has a hard time going into gear.Always compare with other engine. If you loose the oil while under way you will not notice there is a problem until you try to put into neutral or the smell of burnt disc hits your nose. Results are : Engine will not go into neutral, it will stay in gear and even start in gear. When put into reverse engine will shut down (do not try to accelerate engine going into reverse because you could sheer the MG502 shaft). MK

MK, There is a local place around here (Massachusetts) that rebuilds gears. I don't know if there is anything like that in your area, but if it were my gear that was burn't up I'd just give it to them and have it rebuilt. Not sure if they sell parts. Is that an option at all in your part of the world?

Sean, Some years back, I loss oil via a pin hole in the port trans cooler while running offshore, melted and broke the spine off. Volvo wanted $1200 for a new cooler, had a shop in Tampa fix it for $100, and had to replace the trans. You were lucky!

BERTRAM PRIDE '07 PLAN TO ATTEND!Ed, Was the trans cooler on your current gas motors in the Bert? There's a place in Long Island (Lenco) that sells both the oil and trans coolers for $80-$100 a piece. I have used Transmission Marine in Fort Lauderdale for my gears. They re-built both of my borg warners with no problems. They have an excellent shop, full serivce dynometer for testing, lots of inventory, a real business with expertise in marine transmissions, and they are dealers for all the major trans manufacturers. Their web site is http://www.marinegears.com I would recommend them.
