Bottoms

Post by Admin »

With all this talk about pulling the boats out for winter, I began wondering something. Do you guys have the bottoms cleaned regularly while they are in the water? Rick mentioned to me in an email that one of his zincs was smoked, and that he had put them on last winter. How often do you guys have to change them? Here in California, I get the bottom cleaned every month, and zincs last about 3-4 months. David Sumich 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

David, The usual is to pressure wash the bottom at the fall haul out, either paint the bottom at that time or wait till spring to paint , the spring is when I replace the zincs and they usually last the whole season which was about six months for me. Sometimes as you've probably heard, zincs will go away faster if you're in a "hot " marina or your wiring is not right. Frank Price

Water around here is not warm enough to really grow stuff on your bottom at a rapid rate, that is why we only have to pressure wash when we haul out for the winter. Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 1988 FBC Ipswich, Massachusetts

Dave, how often do you paint your bottom, BTW looks like California is going to be the first state to ban copper based paint, I think San Diego Bay has already done it. Someday we'll all have to strip our bottoms, ($3,000-$5,000), and start using non-toxic bottom paint,($200-$400) a gallon. Can you call Arnold and tell him to nip it in the bud? Bill, I paint every other year. By having the bottom cleaned and inspected every month, it helps keep the paint in good condition. I hadn't heard of the copper paint restriction in San Diego. I will have to look that up and see what is going on with that. David Sumich 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

Boat Useless Magazine just had a story on the copper paint restriction. It came in the mail yesterday. That would be bad news for Interlux as well as the other big paint companies. Its all bullsh** anyway. As usual just a knee jerk reaction. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Dave, I must have type-o'd that.....I do bottom paint and zincs every Spring. In fact, it's the absolute last thing I do before launching. I've always heard (but never read) that it's best to launch soon after you paint the bottom to get the best performance.....always wondered if it was true ! Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA
