Raymarine C70

Post by dougl33 »

I just found out from Raymarine that I can use the interface from my Garmin 182C to use my C70 radar display as a chartplotter. Currently, I'm only using it as a display for my radar. I had figured that Raymarine would only let in a signal from their own proprietary antenna to the chartplotter. Now all I need is a Navioinics gold chip (about $185) to have a backup to my Garmin. Eventually, I'd like to add an electronic heading sensor (i.e. Raymarine's Pathfinder Smart Heading Sensor or some other fluxgate compass) so I can overlay the chart on top of the radar display. I just heard back from Navtronics (www.navtronics.com). I had spoken with them at the Boston Boat Show the other day. They are an electronics shop in NH. They said that rather than useing Raymarine's fluxgate compass, they had been useing a product from a company called KVH (http://www.kvh.com/products/product.asp?id=58). The product is the AutoComp 1000. Apparently its a cheaper altenative to Raymarine. I found it online for around $370, while the cheapest I found Raymarine's was $623. Doug, I use the rc36 rate compass from simrad with my autopilot. The rate compass is better than the fluxgate ,so they say ,do not ask me why.I think the smart sensor from raymarine might be a rate compass as well. I am guessing that the kvh is a fluxgate. It seems like the rate compass is the latest and greatest..... Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC

According to Navtronics, the only advantage to having the Pathfinder Heading Sensor over the KVH is that Raymarine's product can be calibrated directly through the C70's screen while the KVH has to be done manually. He said that the purpose of the sensor was to give a true heading to the network. The overlay would work without it, but the boat has to be moving (course over ground) in a straight line. If you were to turn, the radar would not catch back up until you were heading back in a straight line again. He also said that they use the KVH in 99% of the setups that they do. It seems like its pretty cool. I won't be doing anything until next spring now anyway, so I've got plenty of time to research. How'd you make out with your cockpit deck? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

I don't know what Tim did with his deck yet, but I am leaning more and more to painting it..... I know it might be a maintenence nightmare for some - but it looks like crap and if I do all of the prep and prep and prep and more prep, then paint it right - it might look brand new!!!

I should have been more specific - I was refering to the cockpit deck question - not the raymarine. As far as what is wrong with it - it is old and beat up. Dings, scratches, cracks, discoloration, ....you name it - even scrubbing the heck out of it doesn't help it much. Guys at the marina say "it's fine" but not good enough for me...I want better it to look "great" or "good" - not fine.

Sean, My wife used oxyclean and gain detergent and made it kind of like a paste and scrubbed it in and let it sit in the sun awhile then pressure washed it off .she redid that 3 or 4 times and the deck looks great ...that took off all the rust marks too.i still have some chips and scrstches but it is not too bad.I have a fiberglass guy doing some work on my deck so i will ask him his oppinion on painting. Doug, I will post my deck situation under my repower section to kind of keep my project all together. Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC
