Again, to me this notion of running 28 knots 80 miles offshore is somewhat rediculous. I understand it might be cool to do that once or twice a summer but not worth powering the boat for it. I do not want to start a huge debate but I go offshore a fair amount and have fished bigger rigs then mine and I have never seen us run 28 knots for any meaningful amount of time. Hell, our 33s would be getting air at 28 in a modest swell. As for running her "fully loaded" it's only ice and beer for the love of god and I would never bring 6 guys to the canyons in my boat. Why would Yanmar sell me down when I asked them point blank if I am under-powering the boat?? They said they use them all the time in similar boats and in the 33 specifically and it is a good match for the boat. They never said the 370s were not a good choice but did say it was not necessary and i would not be over-working the 315s. Do you think they lied to me?

GMarty, I do not believe Yanmar lied to you, I think the 315's will be a great fit. But having done this once before, I would opt for the most power I could afford within reason. 10k is past my limit for 315 vs 375 hp and I too would likely pass at that price, but for 5k more.. OH yeah, I'd do it. Its not just about using the speed all the time and I don't buy into the "pushing the 315's scenario". If your propped right and run them at what the MFG recommends, it should be impossible to overload them. My inclination, as I said before is that having more power gives you options you don't have with less power... and you can still run the higher power engines at the same speed as the lower power engines and get the same economy. In my case, their are times in my boat where due to conditions, it wants to run at 23-24 knots and thats where the boat "settles in and feels most comfortable". I know becuase I can get there but that speed is beyond what I can maintain for an extended cruise. If I had 50 more HP per engine, I'd have that option. IF the price of admission were reasonable, I'd recommend the higher power. There is an exception I recently heard about and I won't mention names. There is a boat out there that has both a 315 and 370 hp power option. The lower HP is a lighter engine than the higher HP engine. Well it appears that the added weight of the higher HP engine eats up much of the performance so you end up with a boat that is less efficient and not much faster. There is a clear case of when not to opt for higher power.

This might be a good option for anyone thinking of converting: http://boatdiesel.com/index.cfm?cfpush& ... N=23688089 We already know that the 3126's will fit. $30K for the pair sounds like a good deal to me. Not sure if trannies are included, even if they're not, you're still looking at 420hp diesels for under $36K. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

They do fit. If you recall, there was a 1988 FBC called the 4 Bells that was for sale up in Danvers. That had the 420hp 3126's. Doug Currier installed them. He actually told me that he could have made the boat a bit faster with the 370hp 5.9 Cummins because of the weight savings. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA
