Tackle Station

Post by smanni »

I am thinking about building a new tackle station this winter and started drawing it out - I do a lot of Kitchen renovations (on the side) and have built a few custom cabinets. I am considering AZEC board ( which is basically a PVC material) or Starboard for the material. What do you guys think. - any experience with these. I like the Azec because it can be mechanically fastened with Stainless screws and chemically fastened at joints with PVC cement - creating a very strong bond. The Starboard can be screwed, but tough to bond with glue - even 5200 seems to bond only fairly well. This along with a MAJOR interior rehab are at the top of my winter list.

Let me know how it works out and where you put it. The PVC board you're using, is it resistant to UV rays? I've had the same feelings as you about starboard, a good product but tyhe difficulty in gluing makes it limited in my opinion for some projects. Take pictures if you can. Frank

I had two tackle cabinets made out of Starboard. The only problem with them was that the drawers would occasionally bind when heavy items caused the thin bottom panels to sag. Additional screws solved the problem. Other than that, they worked well and kept a like new appearance in spite of constant exposure to sunlight.

Yes the pvc board materials are uv stabilized. Not all of them, but the few that I am considering are. I picked up a few sample pieces at a local building supply center (Not lowes or home depot - they usually do not have it) and have been playing with it. The one material that I am leaning towards is used a lot or replacement trim on houses and apparently holds up well to all weather - but I don't know about using it for a tackle station. If Don 33 had 2 made out of starboard - then that helps me feel confident about using sheets of starboard - but the inability to glue it - or resistance to accepting glue - still pushes me away. I will take pictures - I have most of it drawn out and should probably start in early november - when the boat comes out of the water and I start itching for next season...

I've read or heard about a way to "heat weld" starboard pieces together, but don't personally know how it is done. Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com
