Props

Post by captgene »

I sent Michigan Wheel a note with all the 33 FBC specs. 340 gassers ,1.5 shafts and the 2.57:1 gears and all the rest of the wgt loads etc. This is the analaysis they sent me. BTW I took my 23x26 down to 23x23 and added a medium cup. Katrina has me stuck in the yard, but I should get going today or tomorrow to see how it reacts. Dear Mr. Dugan: Thank you for your interest in Michigan Wheel propellers. The following is the result of the propeller analysis performed based on the data you submitted. As a result of our analysis, our naval architect suggests you consider the following: Diameter and Pitch: 23 x 23 Number of blades: Three Material: Nibral Cup: Medium Style: Dyna-Jet or DJX * Suggested retail price: Approx. $1,458.00 each * Plus applicable tax and shipping COMMENTS: The suggested propeller size is based on the information you provided. Propeller sized to allow engine to reach its maximum rated RPM. Alternately, we suggest a 23 x 22 Nibral Dyna-Quad or DQX (4-blade) propeller with medium cup. Suggested retail price is approx. $1,727.00 each for Dyna-Quad and approx. $2,035.00 each for DQX. If the current propellers are not cupped, reduce the suggested pitch by one inch. Three blade propellers generally offer improved top speed compared to four blade propellers. Four blade propellers generally offer improved cruise performance compared to three blade propellers. The recommended clearance between propeller tip and hull bottom is 15% of the propeller diameter. We hope this information is useful to you. For more information on how to purchase our propellers, please check our website for the Michigan Wheel dealer nearest you. Again, thank you for your interest in Michigan Wheel propellers. Should you have any questions or concerns about your analysis, or require assistance in locating the suggested propellers, please contact our Inboard Customer Service Department at 1-800-369-4335 between 8 am and 5 pm Eastern time. Sincerely, Greg Verseput MWC Inboard Customer Service Gene Dugan

Gene, I have the 1.9:1 trans and inch and 3/8's shafts so I can't comment on the sizing. Hopefully Frank will chime in since he's got the same setup and had his props re-worked last winter. What were you getting for rpms before you took out the pitch and added the cup? You might not pick up that many rpms since adding cup is like adding pitch. 2 years ago I had my 21x20 3 blades cut down to 20x18 with a med cup and picked up zero rpms. It wasn't until I had them knock out nearly all of the cup before I saw an increase of about 300 rpms. Of course 1 year later I wound up throwing a balde and had to start all over again![:(!] I'd shop around for prices. I got my 4 blade Mich nibral DQX's last summer for just under $2000 for the pair! http://www.propfix.com/ Here's the shop I used. Incidentally, the above price included shipping. Tim just bought a set of DQX's this spring and did a lot of shopping so maybe he'll chime in as well. Good luck. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Gene, I'm at 23x 24 right now with the same gearing as you and I still will only turn 4000 RPMs , so you should be about perfect. Frank Price

Reply to all, My WOT was about 3900 and not 4400. Some of that I have to atribute to not a perfectly clean bottom and all the junk on the boat. Basically with the cup, this will turn out to be the same as a 23x25. Hopefully pushing water a bit more efficiently. I didn't want to get carried away. The 23x26 seem to be fine other that turning up to 4400. The boat does not seem to work hard getting to plane or anything. Yes, I measured the distance from the center of the hub to the bottom of the boat, and they came back with the 23 dia. I wasn't concerned about their prices. I have 4 blades, but one has 2 hosed up blades. I'm looking for a replacement that will match. 2 yrs and still haven't found one. Goal is to get the 4 blades tweaked and back on. In the interm I'm dinking with the 3 blades. Gene Dugan

I paid the yard bill last night. Puke. You really have to watch these guys. I had a sub do the cutlass bearings, pull the props, drop the rudders and rework the rudder boxs. They billed $630 for labor. I asked for the subs bill to them and it was $360. Duh..found at least $1000 in errors. The props cost me $540 , so it better be good. Depending on the weather & tide I hope to get out of Boyton Inlet and run down to Boca , So I can see what the difference is. Gene Dugan

You mentioned that your WOT was at about 4400 and now it is at 3900. What is the recomended WOT for your set up? I am about to start the same process and am curious.

No , I was getting about 3900. Haven't got the boat back in the water yet to see if it will run up to 4400 RPM. Actually I expect it to come up a bit short even now. 4400 is the recommended WOT on the 454 blocks. The new 496 EFIs I think is 4600 to 4800. Gene Dugan
