Doug, That's what they call teak and holly. The dark, wider strips are teak and the light , thinner strips are either holly or sometimes they use maple.There are a couple ways to make a teak and holly sole, it can be solid planks or a plywood with a fairly thin vineer. If you have solid planks you can sand it down to good clean wood and start again with clear. I don't recommend varnish on the sole because it's a bit soft and won't take foot traffic as well as a good eurethane. If you have the plywood sole, you can still sand it out but you have to be a bit more careful because the veneer will be somewhere around 1 to 1.5 milimeters thick.Or 40 to 60 thou. Frank Price
