33 Megabites - Sunday 6/5
Nice day out on the pond. The 33 Megabites crew (my neighbors Jim and Gary) and I left HH at about 0515. Picked up a scoop of very nicely cured 'chovies and set out for a spot called Split Rock at the Middle Grounds. We were up on the anchor a just after 0615. Had a nice steady pull all morning on a good variety of fish, mostly Calicos and Sand bass. The Calicos tended to be in the 1-2 pound range and many were released to fight again. We did have a handful of larger models that we kept for the fridge. The Sandies on the other hand were all of the larger models. Not quite "Grump" material, but close at 3-4 pounds. We also landed a 5 pound Sheephead, and an 8 pound Lingcod (way to go Jackpot Jim!). Gary was on a real nice fish for about 12 minutes before it finally broke the line, probably an even bigger Goat or Lingo, since there wasn't really any head shakes like those given by a Halibut or White Seabass, nor the merciless runs of a Mossback. Of course there were plenty of Macks around, but mostly in the middle of the water column. We fished on the bottom the whole time, but we did get a few of the Calicos on the sink after the tide change at about 1030. We were anchored in about 80-90 ft. and to my observation, we were on "the" spot, as I didn't see too many other boats out there doing all that well. It was a great weather day too, with maybe a 2 ft. swell, low wind, and a nice and easy Southerly current. Water temp gauge is screwed up on the boat, so I am not sure of the temps, but the water was clean and green. We pulled anchor at about 1230, and were back cleaning at the slip by 1330. Forgot the camera, so sorry for not having the pics. Total count for 3 anglers: 1 - Lingcod 1 - Sheephead 5 - Sandbass 20 - Calico bass plenty of Mackerel David Sumich 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

Structure, I am always looking for structure. Temp breaks in the area of structure are even better, that's why I need to get my water temp gauge working again. David Sumich 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

We also had a goods day on Sunday, with a trip to Tilly's (about 15 miles). On the way out saw porpoises, which is a first for me around here, and they were very active, after food I would assume. When we got to Tilly's, we just about stopped on a large whale and whatched in awe as it disappeared. The fishing was slow but fairly steady as we drifted and fished the bottom for cod and haddock for the next 3hours. Like David's report , the weather was pefect, in the 70's with a swell of about 4 ft, but gradual so you couldn't even feel it. A great day on the water. Total catch for 3 anglers; 4 decent cod 5 decent haddock 5 cusk Frank Price '87 SF"JEANNE CLAIRE' Rowley Ma.
