ENGINE TROUBLE

Post by BECCA ROSE »

Since the boat went in the water, I have had an issue with the port engine, 1988, 454. The engine fires right up as always, but the idle is poor, but does not stall. The exhaust water is bubbly, almost carbonated looking. It also has traces of unburned fuel. Underway I have no overheating and was able to cruise at regular speed and RPM's. Over the winter I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I have swapped out plug wires and cap and rotor and still does the exact same thing. Carb was rebuilt and it's still doing same thing. Seawater pump housing and impeller were also changed over winter. I have checked plug wire routing and all are correct. I am assuming that I must have done something incorrect while installing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, impeller and housing. But it all looks fine. Thanks for the help, just trying to hold off Mister 80 dollar an hour mechanic as long as I can. Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 33 Bertram FBC 1988

Bill: if it only runs poor cold, then 99% it is the carb that was rebuilt...if it is a 4 barrel quadrajet, then it has a bad choke pull assembly, which should open the choke when it starts cold....takr off the flame arrestor, and start it up and see if the choke opens..... hope this helps some.[:)] Bill Beeson 33 bertram RAZZMATAZZ

Thank you big time for the help with the engine Frank. I wish we would have listened to Doug earlier when he said it might be the timing. He is sooooo smart![;)] If he could ever fit down in the engine room he would be a hell of a mechanic. [;)] Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 33 Bertram FBC 1988

You're welcome Bill, Doug was right (of course). Sort of like when your car won't start and your wife says"maybe it's the muffler", so you say"shut up, it can't be the muffler" and then it turns out to be the muffler after all. BTW, I ended up with your screwdriver in my tool bag. We'll have to get together soon to adjust your idle mixture so I can give the screwdriver back.I wasn't trying to steel it(honest) Frank Price

I was looking for that screw driver last night! I thought the wife threw it out! We'll hook up sometime like you said. Thanks again, hopefully I'll take her out for a spin tomorrow and see how she goes. Looking forward to another rainy weekend... Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 33 Bertram FBC 1988

Doug, I'm telling you, you may have little mechanical ability but I think you're clarevoyant. You could be the swammy of engines. "Oh Swammy, why is my engine making noise" Frank Price
