Cost of service

What kind of rates are you guys paying for marine mechanics these days? My marina is getting out of control on this stuff. They are also killing me on the little stuff. Shrink wrap, wash bottom, winter storage.

My guy is 45/hr - but if he does any kind of big job - repower, or a high volume of small stuff - he is negotiable. Even his set price repairs are reasonable and he will drop them if doing a lot of work at one time - or a lot over a long period of time. I try to do most myself - but any engine or major time consuming jobs are for him - I don't have time to drive 2 hrs to the boat, then work for 8 - then drive home. I can only tackle the things that I can finish in one or two days at a time - I hate leaving something half done for the next weekend - once I start - I want it done.

I pay $80 per hour, but I trust my mechanic implicitly. He has become a good friend of mine over the past few years and has done a lot of work for nothing. For instance, I had a problenm with a bad ground last summer and he took apart (and put back together) half the boat trying to straighten it out. I know he was there for several hours, but he never sent a bill. He also will drop whatever he is doing if I call him. I consider myself lucky to have him around. $110/hr at Summit North in Delaware, compared to what I've read here it's excessive. There aren't many choices. I don't want to become a mechanic, already have too many professions. Heinz J. Dommert 1986 SF Bright Raven, Summit North Marina DE

Official yard rates here in Wilmington, NC, are in the $85/hr range for skilled mechanics, painters, carpenters, etc, and around $70/hr for semi/unskilled workers. I had a great guy in Charleston when I first bought "Phoenix" who charged me $45/hr and was very trustworthy and did great work.. that was 3-4 years ago.. he tells me he charges around $50-55/hr now if he likes you, and more if you are a PITA. Yards around here are dead as far as major projects are concerned, and I am hearing rumors that some are padding their bills either by doing some work that the owner might not have approved but the yard said was necessary, or that the workers are intentionally working slow to get more hours. There are only 2 or 3 yards that have the capability to do major projects, and they fight between themselves to get jobs.

The two yards I use in Wareham are at 97 and 100+.. I have a guy I use for $50/hr (when the boat isnt in the marina)
