Starter solenoid

Post by Admin »

I seem to be having a bit of trouble locating only the soleniod for one of my starters. It is for the Mercruiser 7.4 liter 454 CID V8 (330 HP). Has anyone replaced only this item before? Can you purchace a 'marine' solenoid separately? I don't want to pay for the whole starter. I checked West Marine, but they only sell whole starters. David Sumich Bertram33.com Forum Administrator

Thanks Al, I see it. I'm getting tired of jumping it with the screwdriver! [;)] David Sumich Bertram33.com Forum Administrator

David, I know you can get just the solenoid. I replaced the one on my Stb. engine. I broke off one of the posts when removing it to rebuild the Transmission. You need a Marine Parts distributer. West Marine, Boat US tend to just deal in the whole assembly. BOW is also good for this stuff, bcuz they are a Merc Dealer. Automotive will also work. If you take it to NAPA, Discount Auto, where you can match it up. That's what I did, because I was in a hurry. It's been in there over 2 yrs. and seems to be holding up OK. E.W. Dugan

I have 3208 Cats and if you get the serial number off the engine Cat Dealer can find the part in their computer. It doesn't have to be a marine dealer.
