Motor Boating Article

Post by ckuppens »

I picked up tyhe nov/dec Motorboating mag for a flight yesterday. There is an interesting article about a repower on a 1974 38. The owner repowered with Volvo Penta IPS 600 drives. They went from Cat 3208's. The top end went from 28 to 35 Knots and the fuel consumption was lowered by 30-40%. The exhaust goes through the drives so the smoke from the engines was completely eliminated. Interesting way to spend 220K!

The other thing was the boat's center of gravity only moved 1 inch and the draft was reduced by 6 inches!

That guy posted his story on the boatdiesel site from the start. I got some flak because I made a comment about how much money he was spending compared to what the boat was worth. Nice final set up to be sure, but he did a sh!t load of work and spent a sh!t load of money.

Yeah. He redid the interior and all new paint job... all told 300K in rehab to the boat. If you are going to buy a new 38 SF with IPS drives you will end up spending more than 300K so I guess it makes sense if the layout works for you... Also I believe he owns a boatyard... That helps

If you think you can make money or justify the expense we all spend on our boats then your probably borderline crazy. It's like skiing, its expensive as hell but it's also the most fun you can have.

Seeing how the new 800 is about a million bucks, (and hopefully it wont delaminate) he will be alright in the long run. I saw that article too..
