I'm looking at a Bertram 33 FBC 1984 with twin Yanmar 440HP engines on my side of the Atlantic/Mediterranean. Asking price is $65K and engine hours are less then 300. Since its only a 2hr flight to the marina, I'll probably go and inspect the boat myself. Alternatively I'm also considering a gas powered boat which I could then convert to Diesels, preferably Cummins 6BTAs with 315HP. The reason I'm looking for a cheap Gas alternative is that I could do the conversion myself. I've browsed the net for some bargains and the are a few bargains out there, even selling at about $20K, albeit requiring a cosmetic touch up, which again, I could do myself. Its the shipping costs that are driving me over my budget, as I would need about $24K + taxes to ship the boat all the way to Malta. To give you an indication of my budget its in the region of $60K with a stretch of $10K

Ron, I don't think Denison Yacht Sales was targeting you with your 1980. This the second time I have received the same mailing. Shrink wrapping her tomorrow then waxing the skis!

Not me. If I sold my 33 I'd probably be in a 37 before too long.

Bill Diane and have always liked the Sabre.....that was until a friend of mine and her ran a 38 express back from the Newport boat show....it had to stay behind a 52 Hatt that was breaking the seas for it....it wanders around and you have to work the hell out of it.......very disapointed......nice interior and sharp boat.....sitting on the dock......we will be keeping the fat chick and be will probably by another one that's had a steady diet of butter and ice cream someday. Joe, The boat would be great with the yanmars and would be very fast. They only have 300 hours and you save 24k in shipping charges.

For a fishing boat in Malta with a full tower, all would be envious! Again 50 ksh sales price with diesels and newer Genny! Once you call cummins and price 6BTA re mans at 20k to 25k each you will soon forget the re power option. Captains that have re power what did your re power end up costing you? On the subject of the deals out there, I remember reading about recently reading a post about the "deal boat's" voyage to Texas recently. Hell I missed the deal when a 44 Merritt was sold in an estate sale for 90k. The buyer took delivery and listed the boat at 600k the next day. That's a deal but I have never been lucky enough to have one fall into my lap!

I'm weighting my options at the moment, and have also come across a 33 FBC with twin 250HP Cummins. Add says they're very economical. However, realistially, with twin 250's, what would I expect as cruise speed and top-end speed?. On a different note, I really do appreiate all your comments and suggestions. Thanks.

I doubt you will be happy with only 250 HP per side.. the boat would probably be too slow for you.. 315/300 HP boats get just about 1 knot per 100 engine RPM.. mine gets about 25 knots at 2600 RPM. I don't know anyone who has less than 315 HP engines (as far as diesel boats go).. You will certainly use less fuel than others use.. all of us in the 315/330 HP range get about 1 nautical mile per gallon on average.

Stay away from the 250's, wrong engine for that boat.

Thanks for the quick reactions to my post on the Cummins 250HP. I was wondering whether the engines were slightly on the low side of HP given the deep Vee hull and the weight of the boat. Whats the avarage fuel burn you guys get while out trolling, say at a speed of 7Knts?. That info is important to me since I need to travel about 27Nmiles out to the fishing grounds, then troll for about 6 hrs and then back again to the marina. So, with this info I know I'll be burning about 54 US gallons to get to the fishing grounds and back, at an avarage speed of 20-22knts, but I'm missing the info on fuel burn during the actual fishing (trolling).
