Window tinting

Post by jrhhtk1 »

I've got a 1982 SF with the original clear windows and the previous owner put pleated shades inside. I think tinted windows would give the boat a newer look and also keep it cooler inside. My question is how do you put tinting on the windows? Do you have someone come on board and do it or do you take the windows out 1 by 1 and do it yourself? Jeffrey R. Have a professional window tint outfit do it. They will do it right, and use the right stuff. There should be a million tint companies where you live. I've seen jobs that owners have done and it looks like the owner did it. Prices will be all over the place, so call around.

Thanks Bill. Yours looks nice btw. Tinting makes it look not as retro. Jeffrey R. Hughes M/V "Pescara" 1982 - 33' Bertram SF Santa Rosa Beach, FL

The tint on the front windshield works great and I went with a limo tint(dark). The tint job is only as good as the install, if there are any bubbles make sure they push them out and you will be happy.

Check out a product called v-kool.(v-kool.com) I've been using the regular limo tint for years, but will be switching over to the v-kool next month. Saw it at a boat show & my buddy sells it. Great product. Actually rejects the heat instead of the regular tinting that absorbs the heat and acts like a radiator. Joe Tomaini 1988 Sportfish Attitude Adjustment II Fort Lauderdale, FL

Against prior recommendations here I did my own just last weekend, and did a few windows twice until I liked it. It took a bit to get comfortable with the process. Having done a lot of vinyl sign application, the process is similar, material quite different. I am pretty picky, it isn't bad at all though. The material was inexpensive from the manufacturer, maybe $100 with plenty extra. Of course there is always the touch of experience that makes it 100%, you just have to figure out what to do yourself, and what to avoid.

Scott: Did you use the v-cool material or regular tint?
