Gel goat patch

Post by ckuppens »

I have a few snap posts on the fly bridge backdrop enclosure that are either missing or loose. I am planning on removing the loose ones and filling the holes with marine tex, re drilling holes and screwing in new snap posts for the enclosure... I am wondering what kind of paint (awlgrip? can you get gel coat?)I can use to match the original gel coat color on my 1979? I have about 20 quarter sized spots along the enclosure I would like to touch up by hand so the boat looks decent when the enclosure is off... Thanks!

If you use marine tex you will have to use paint over it, not gelcoat. Polyester just doesn't cure correctly over epoxy. A better way might be to use a vinyl ester resin with glass and then a gelcoat. Mini craft in Florida is a good source for gel coat etc. but be prepared to tint it. There's will be too yellow.

Chris, I'll trade with you.Since I am getting a new enclosure I will have over 50 holes to fill.Plus I decided at the same time to remove some of the old antennas. So far I've taken out 3 with their mounts out of 6 antennas. Al

Wow... that is a lot of holes. Unfortunately I already filled some of mine with Marine tex. I am going to have to hunt around for some paint at least for this year. Hopefully the patches won't be very noticeable

So far I have patched 135 holes in the cabin and 92 in the flybridge console. Since my boat was painted by the previous owner (doofus) I have to paint the exterior anyway. I probably have another 150 or so holes to fill on the exterior surfaces. I plan on painting from the deck up while at my slip, section by section.

Frank... I am wondering what you use for paint and where you get it... I am just looking to make a few small patches until i consider a long term solution. I could probably leave the marine tex as is but I would like to make it look nicer.

Not sure if I'm the Frank you are looking for but US paint oyster white is a pretty good match. I would not get awlgrip since it doesn't blend well. They have a newer acrylic urethane that would be a good starting point and should be fairly easy to work with.

either Frank will do! HA... Is that something they would stock at a west marine or should I order a quart of it through my boat yard or online? Thanks for the help.

Hey Guys, I used that new product Six-10 from West Systems and it works great, it premixes it self as it comes out of the tube. Mike

Chris, I think they'd have to order it. I haven't been in a West marine for some time though but I don't remember them having a bunch of colors in stock.

GlassTech in Miami matched mine. Check with them and they will likely sell and send you some.
