I know Ryan's boat. He has fixed her up nicely. The 3116's are in great shape. Don't know why he has to sell; but at $76,900 it is priced better then "right".

Ryan, Sorry to hear you've got to sell, hopefully it's to go bigger ;) I too know Ryan and we've traded notes and tips on the B35 and his is in fine shape with thoughtfully done upgrades. Best of Luck with the Sale.

Nice boat Ryan, but what about the cat 3116 engines? Is that the model that had a lot of issues? How have your engines performed? Franco

Any 3116's that are still running will be fine. Most of the soft block issues manifested themselves very early and started something like 12-15 years ago. The other issue was trying to pull more than 350hp from the 3116. Ryan's are rated at 300hp and should give a lengthy service life if properely maintained.

3116's are good engines. Yes early models suffered from several issues. The main being "soft" blocks cast if France during a Cat labor union strike that disrupted US operations. Those "soft" blocks have long since passed out of circulation. Other issues usually stem from boat being "overpropped" not making full rpm at WOT. Many boat builders installed 3116's in their boats. The boats were sold and the owners brought lots of $hit on board increasing the boat gross weight. Now a boat that was propped right at one point is now in an overload situation. 3116's do not this condition and bad things happen. Just make sure the boat makes 2800 RPM minimum at WOT loaded. If not try to determine how many hours in the over loaded condition and price accordingly. Remember Mans were called Man-grenades for good reason. Even today Mans have very expensive 1000 and 2000 hour maintenance schedules; costing in the $50K range for two perfectly running engines. They require this to keep them from becoming Man-grenades.

Charlie and John, Thanks for the good word on my boat. These 3116's are the later version engines, long after CAT had corrected the issues. I have the boat propped to turn 2860 loaded, was propped to turn almost 2900 when I bought the boat over four years ago. Someone could add some cup and gain another knot and still not be over loading them. As Charlie and Doug have said, their's nothing wrong with a 3116 that hasn't been overloaded or had too much hp squeezed out of it. John, might be looking to move up a little bit but I mostly have the 4-5 year itch that I get with everything I own.
