Transmission Advice...
Transmission Advice...
Have 1400 Hrs on Engines and getting a clicking sound in my Strbd Trans at idle. After acceleerating the sound goes away... She runs as she should with no slipping. The clicking seems to be getting louder. An Tran oil test last year did indicate clutchwear. Checked rear bearing on transmission and it was fine. Allignment is fine. Engines seem fine, well maintained, good compression, new risers and manis, etc... They are Borg 1018010 2.57:1... Heres where i need advice. 1. Should i just have both Rebuilt? 2. Has anyone had expreince with remans (where i trade mine in)? or is it smarter to just have mine rebuilt over winter? 3. Should i do both or just have the strbd one redone? (dont mind cost) 4. Any other thoughts on that sound? 5. Roughly what should a transmission rebuild cost? 6. Anybody have experience with 1800runsnew.com?

Go to www.marinegears.com in Fort Liquordale Fl. they have a question and answer section in the web site. I hd them re-build my Borg Warners, I shipped them to 'em, then went over and picked them up in person. Excellent, CLEAN shop, all the tools and a dynamometer for testing. Good job, fair price on both the borg warners.

Around here it runs at least 2K for a rebuld of a velvet drive. Not worth it but that's the going rate. I would probably keep my ear on it and if it gets worse you can buy an exchange unit , they have a bunch on the shelf up here at Marine Gear supply,Rowley, Ma. I sold my old ones to him as cores even though they were still fine.

I had the same issues with my Hurth transmission, I have 2004 8.1 Crusader engines. I had the representative from Hurth come down and inspect the transmission he told me it was an engine problem. I had the representative from Crusader look at the problem, he attached his laptop to the OB2 connector on the engine in about 5 minutes he determined the problem was the coil on #5 cylinder. I replaced the coil end of problem. Not sure if that's going to be the results with your problem but don't over look the engine. Good luck, Mike.
I had this happen in one of my previous boats. I noticed it clattered a bit at idle. I called the Marine Gear in Ft. Lauderdale and was told this was common on a Borg-Warner gear if the idle is set to low. My idle was about 600 rpm, and they told me to bump it up to 650 rpm with the gear in forward idle. That solved it. A year or so later I got a different "clicking" sound which turned out to be one of the springs in the pressure plate on the flywheel. It finally let go one day down in the Keys when I started the Boat. I heard it go ratteling around the flywheel. I never did fix it. Just got a bit more "clunk" when I put it in gear. Sold it and the happy new owner sunk it. I think I would milk some more time out of the engines and transmissions. But I know if you are like me, it is bugging the crap outta you. I second Gene's diagnosis. If the RPM is set too low they will have a clicking sound and it's nothing to worry about. If the noise stops when you're in gear & bump the RPM up, it's not an internal engine problem. Ron, the owner of Marine Gear has been a personal friend for years & he has always provided reputable service. I'd run those gears until you feel a noticable slip when you're accelerating under a full load. Then send them to Ron to rebuild. Joe Tomaini 1988 Sportfish Attitude Adjustment II Fort Lauderdale, FL

I think I would agree with Gene. Sounds like the flex plate is a good possibility. Take a long screw driver and hold the handle end to your ear while placing the metal end on different spots on the engine and gear. You will probably be able to tell where the noise seems the loudest. Scott 1987 B33 SF Dealer's Choice V Edisto Beach, SC
