Rick, Technically you need a captains license to be able to charge for your services on the water. I'm sure whatever insurance company is involved would also like to see a licensed captain at the wheel if there were a problem. I have the license but not the time and not much experience south of Ma., so I'd be reluctant to take that one.

I also have a license but can't get time to do any more deliveries this summer, and I am going to help a friend move his boat down the Mississippi in a couple of weeks. He is doing the Great Loop and is now in Michigan. I don't think the CG would have a problem with an unlicensed individual moving someone else's boat.. My understanding is that the license allows us to be compensated for taking passengers for compensation, but anybody can be paid to deliver a boat for someone else. Certainly the insurance company might require a licensed master to move their insured's boat, but that is not a CG issue. I have done deliveries between Mystic and Annapolis.. the MA to NYC part is not all that difficult.. we went west in Long Island Sound, down the East River, through NYC. The main issue is catching the tidal currents right in NYC.. we passed the UN building at about 8 knots in a 32' sailboat. The main concern I would have is delivering a strange boat that was just sold is a real crapshoot.
