Trouble Finding an Insurance Company
I have been looking for an insurance company to insure a 1982 33 FBC. I had a survey done and the assessed value was at 94,400. I cant find a company that will insure the boat for collision or property damage at that price. The highest I have seen them go is 50K. Does anyone have suggestions on some companies I can contact? I am in CT. Thanks in advance. -Matt

I use Charter Lakes and they seem to be knowledgeable about Bertram's, and did not show any reluctance to insure my 1983, plus my local agent is a great guy! They wanted a survey from a reputable surveyor, and the one I used was already known by my agent so I had no problems. They placed me with Markel. (sp?)

I did try the boat us, they would only go to 50K. I will give travelers a shot. The survey went well with the exception of the STBD motor overheated while on plane. Once the RPM's were brought down it cleared quickly. The CAT guys are coming to look at it today. She cruised around 21 - 22 and topped out around 25, which is what I was looking for. The engines are reported by bertram as 300, but when CAT puts the numbers in thier data base it shows 320... either way I am happy with the cruise speed. I am hoping the STBD motor can be fixed or it will be the end of this deal and on with the search. Thanks for the info. -Matt

I used AMICA. With a survey price of 94.4K full coverage, 300K liabiltiy and a 5% deductible it was just under 1100. BUT... I had to change all my insurance to them. Still cheaper than the compitition, and I had USAA insurance before. They were very helpful and personable, I would recomend them. Hope this info helps someone. -Matt

Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Cummins 6BTA's Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA Travelers insured my 38 Bertram for about 15 years; not a single claim. After the last hurricane here in Fl 4 yrs ago I had a little damage; they paid the claim and cancelled me two weeks later. When I called them after receiving the cancellation letter they said it was not because of the claim, it was because of the age of the boat. 1979. If true, your days with them are numbered. Presently with State Farm at 5000. a yr but Boat US just quoted about 2000. less.
Marine Underwriters cancelled me and I never had a claim. During that period we had several hurricanes but no damage. Getting insurance coverage is crazy. I don't see how the guys in Florida can afford to insure a boat with the prices I hear the insurance companies are wanting. Buzz
