repainting stripes

Post by Crabby »

Has anyone repainted the stripes above the rub rail a different color--- if so did you have it sprayed on or can it be done well by hand. thanks, Crabby

Crabby, I think that you'll have to use a good eurethane and spray it. The gold border is also originaly sprayed also. I prefer black, it's your boat but the blue looks a little dated.

Crabby, If the stripes are original, you can probably get away with sanding and shooting over them without stripping. If they've been redone , then stripping is your best option since you won't know what kind of paint is on it.

I did a roll and tip on my 28B many years ago. I used Interlux. The job was quick and easy. I just did a light sanding, wash, tape, roll and tip. Spraying looks like a big tape-off job to me. Charlie

the paint is original. We were thinking the same thing about spraying. Did the hand painted stripes turn out alright? would you do it that way again? Did you sand between coats or just put one coat on? thanks, Crabby

Spraying will look like the stripes were sprayed, brushing will look like the stripes were brushed. You and everyone else will be able to tell which way they were done. Would you want your car to be brushed if it was being repaired at the auto body shop? As with anything, a little more effort will give you much better results. I don't know Bill. I've seen some hullsides that were supposedly rolled and tipped that I thought came out pretty well. I've been holding off on my stripes because I know it would take me 3 days just to tape everything off. Frank P. is a great taper!! I've rolled and tipped more than one hull in the coast guard and it looked so-so at best. That was white, I can't imagine black would be any easier to deal with. The ones you probably saw Doug were done by professionals in a closed environment. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

Yah, I'm going to roll and tip the Ferrari I'm working on when it's time to paint it....I just hate that masking stuff.Doug, I bet that rear bulkhead I sprayed for you would have come out sweet if we rolled it.
