Hey Santa, put me on the list for all the same stuff. Since we're asking, let's get specific about which elves to send to do the work. I'd like this one: Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Sean M. your list was looking good until I saw what's on Sean B's list. I've already handled the power end of things but I wouldn't mind if Santa's elfs transported my B35 to Capt Patrick's shop for a complete paint and interior rework. Oh yeah and a few could stick around and help Capt Patrick... br, John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Dear Santa, I won't ask you to do all that hard remodeling work because I know this is your busy season. So instead, I would like a new 65' Bertram, complete with a crew as pictured in Sean's post. Thank you, P.s. you don't have put it under the tree, just leave the name of the marina and slip number with the keys and title.

Steve, The Cummins are a good choice for these boats. Check out the thread on my re-power under the Convertable section. There are several of us here that are running this setup. Including myself there's also Frank Bryson, Bill Dunlop, Buzz Kistler, Jeff Stephens, plus a few others. Frank Price is attempting the same conversion this winter. For the most part we are all getting: 2400 rpms (cruise) 22-23 knot 2900 rpms (WOT) 28-29 knot I couldn't be happier with the setup. The fuel burn at cruise is right around 18gph. Frank, Bill, and I are all running 1.5:1 trans ratio with 21 inch props (22 pitch with a cup for Bill and I and 23 pitch no cup for Frank). Buzz is running 1.75:1 with 23 inch props though I'm not sure of the pitch (it may be 25 or 26). Given that your boat is a 90 and you've already got 23 inch props, I'd go with Buzz's setup. As far as gennies go, I have the Westerbeke 7.6 BTD with a sound shield. Brian Davin has this gennie as well. It is very smooth and quiet and powers everything (AC included) very easily. I like it because its a 3 cylinder 1800rpm model. I would shy away from anything thats not 3 cylinders. Steve... Doug is right on with our numbers, but for the record, the Cummins 6B engines are rated at 2,800 RPM, should not be run over 2,600 RPM on a regular basis, and per Tony Athens of the Boatdiesel forum their operating life and your bank account will both be improved if they are not run over 2,400 RPM at cruise. Re: Gennies.. I have a Mase single cylinder, 6.5 kw unit. It runs fine and starts OK, but it does make quite a bit of noise compared to the other multi cylinder units. I don't use it often, so I will run it until it needs replacing. Be sure whatever you buy is set up so you can get the best access as possible. The location under the aft cockpit floor is wet and a tough place to work in! Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Frank, You are correct about the 2800rpms for the 6BTA's, but as you know conventional wisdom seems to dictate that these engnies be propped to hit 2900rpms at WOT for the best service life. I ditto your remarks about cruising at/around 2400. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Doug... Yes.. maybe we are in a word definition situation here.. I incorrectly assumed when you said "WOT" you were referring to the rated RPMs, not the full throttle max RPMs the engine can achieve with full load, which is a engine speed only used on occasion when you are checking to verify you are not overpropped. I was concerned that Steve, who is transitioning from gas to diesel might misunderstand the various terms and would think 6Bs could be run consistantly at 2,900+ RPMs, which we all agree is not the case. So, for the record.. my WOT is 2,950 RPMs +/-, RPMs Cummins rates our engines at is 2,800 RPMs, max speed "conventional wisdom" says should not be exceeded for cruising is 2,600 RPMs, and speed not to exceed if you want to be kind to your engines (per Tony Athens and others) is 2,400 RPMs. I will buy the next round when we get together again!
