Hull Value

Post by Bishop »

I would like some opinions about the value of 1977 FBC, given the following: the gas engines need remanufacturing or replacement, the generator is in need of replacment, and the gas tanks have not been replaced (post e-10 era). According to the surveyor, the boat is in good shape structurally, but needs some much needed "TLC." I know it would be a rough estimate, but I guess my question is "what does everyone think a reasonable price for a 1977 FBC would be if I am essentially just buying the hull?

I would work backwards starting with what it will be worth when you get done. Unfortunately, the market does not view these boats as worth that much - even in the best of cases. Quickly, I would guess that even if redone nicely assuming you go with gas and have tanks done it wont be worth more than $80k.

There is an 81 sportfish in Jacksonville that has no generator and is in need of alot of TLC, going for 25K. We just bought our 77 FBC for 31K, but one engine has 2 hours on it, 600 hrs on the other, a newly rebuilt onan generator, full electronics, new carpeting, etc. Hope this helps you a little.[:)]

Being in the middle of a rebuild with me doing all I can (ie: I am not an engine mechanic but can pretty much do everything else) and realizing how much money a rebuild costs even on this basis, I would say no more than $20,000 to $25,000 for a "hull". I think pretty much every Bertram 33 hull you find will be considered to be "structurally sound" by most surveyors unless it has been badly abused, but you will probably need wiring, steering hoses, maybe more steering components, maybe some 120 volt stuff, charger, head stuff (holding tank system or maybe the LectraSan still works), rudder bearings, possibly need to rebuild the rudder shelves, bilge pumps and alarms, etc, etc, etc.. plus a fuel tank (unless you repower with diesel).. to make one seaworthy and safe you will probably need to invest $25,000 to $30,000 minimum, PLUS engines and running gear. Then.. where will you keep it while it is being redone? In your back yard? Great and no cost. In a yard or marina? Big bucks and maybe they want to do a lot if not all the work. It ain't cheap no matter how you slice it. My boat was just a good Bertram hull, needed lots of cosmetic work, but it had good diesels, and I paid less than $60,000, but I have done a lot of work and still have to do the interior. I am retired (mostly) and have tools and soon will have even more time. If you aren't unemployed with lots of available time and not a "hands on" guy you are looking at a multi year and multi tens of thousands of dollars project. Take a look at some of the B31 guys who spend 2-6 years completely rebuilding one of those boats. My advice.. there are no great deals in boats that you start off knowing need to be rebuilt, unless you are very lucky. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Plus remember; once you fix one problem, a new one will pop up that you didn't even know was there! Marissa DeWitt "Miss Missy" Ocala, FL 1977 33 FBC
