New member, new to me Bertram

Post by Mike T »

Wish I took a closer look here a few weeks ago when referenced to this site, I now see there's a 35 section. Just had this surveyed and purchased it last week. Only problem, she's on one side of Cape Cod Canal, and I'm on the other. I've read all about the ethanol/old tank issues and am planning on removing the bridge and trucking her up to the North Shore. Tanks haven't seen ethanol yet, and I'm not sure if I want them to. Will post on flybridge removal process, pretty much just joining and saying hello today. Never would have guessed 2 weeks ago 14 grand would get me into this club.... :-)

Welcome Mike, I replaced my tank last winter, not sure what kind of cockpit floor you have but I was able to lift my complete teak floor out in one piece. I had a tank manufacturer in NJ build the tank. Good luck and welcome aboard. Mike L.

Welcome. I have been watching that boat for a couple of years. Ethanol will wreck that tank in short order. Good luck on your project. Charlie

Welcome Mike, Interesting boat. Didn't know they built them with the bow windows. Lots of luck and let us know what your plans are for her. Mike

Thanks John, this model (35' Caribe) does indeed have more cabin space. Tradeoff is the 5' cockpit. But, I was looking for a roomy interior, and I do believe I found one! :-) The cutout going from the salon down to the galley is a custom job as well, which opens the interior up even more! Mike Thanks Mike, yes, this is more of a cabin cruiser than a sportfish, yet it still says Bertram 35 on the side. :-) Broker and surveyor both implied "same hull as the sportfish". Clearly the upper sheer is lacking, and having only found a few of these on line, and assuming the production run was only a half dozen or so years, my "guess" is it's built from the same mold as the 35, maybe with some foam or wood blocks attached to the tooling to not build the sheer line up so high? Here's a better view of the lifting strakes and hull. Also, I brought a bubble protractor down this weekend and measured 18 degrees of deadrise from the transom up to the shaft log, and 20 degrees at the midship cleat. Anyone know the deadrise #'s for the 35 sportfish? And my owners manual list's the shaft length at 89 1/2", I'd like to see if that # matches the sportfish model as well. Edit, this view (below) shows the lack of the upper forward sheer line a little better. I'm assuming the sportfish front deck would be almost as high as the roof above my front windows. Usually 10 feet or so from the transom the sheer starts to raise on a sportfish, and the curve back there is distinguishable.

Mike, How are you posting your pics? The site's function is still not working. Also, I think your hull is exaxctly the same as the newer 35's, as none of the 35's really have much/any sheer.
