Went to the hudson canyon last week. We left at 10 pm. Wouldnt you know it was nice and cool running out at night. 2 things went wrong on that trip. Just heading out the inlet I put my radar on and it will not power up. Auto pilot worked like a charm so I had to pay attention to what was in front of me instead of relying on my radar. 6hrs of stareing into darkness. Sent the unit to raymarine with a 300 dollar return like new note, still waiting on the return. Anyway, sun comes up and we are trolling, we pick up a nice 55 lb long fin and a small mako shark, about 15 inches, cute litte sucker. The morning starts to move on and it starts getting hot. Go to turn the a.c. on, zippo. It had to be over a hundred out ther with no breeze. Any body know of a good deal on a 16000 btu unit. Mike

Have not heard any negative comments on these units. They were just asked about on boatered.com. All positive. Units are not reverse cycle though. They have an internal resistance heater. Al http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... mot_widget

I liked that unit so I placed a bid on it. All self contained. Looks like a no brainer. To replace the one I have would cost 16oo.oo just for the unit. Looks like a good deal. Hope I get it, Thanks for the heads up, Al Mike

Don't give up on the AC until its confirmed dead. Mine died last Sat and turned out to be 2 $0.25 connectors that fried the start capacitor ($22). Capt Rich Catch 22 1989 33 FBC

Rich, I had checked the start capacitor, the relay, jumped across the C S R terminals. The compressor is just locked up. I wish it was that simple with the connections. She had a good run, 26 yrs. Thanks Mike

Mike, I had "the best" AC man on the east coast check out my AC's They wanted $$4500 bucks to replace my 7000BTU stateroom AC. The compressor was locked up. They came and did all the checks; sent me an estimate. I got an old capacitor off Tom's old 12000BTU AC. Put it on and the AC has been working ever since. Ran for 5 days straight at the Rendezvous. Now the AC guy told me I was giving it a "hot shot" and it was going to explode. Maybe so; but she has about 250 hours on it now and NO PROBLEMS. Charlie

Mike, I replace my A/C last season with a Mermaid 1600 btu reverse cycle. They will sell it factory direct to you and pricing is on there website plus shipping. http://www.mmair.com/marine_division/air_conditioning Hope this helps. By the way the unit was also very easy to install it took me about 4 hours to remove the old and reinstall the new.

I had a similar experience last week. The AC was running fine and then it tripped the breaker. I investigated and found that no water was pumping, I figured the pump went and overheated the compresor and blew the whole thing. Pump wopuld not work after resetting the breaker. THe next day I started the process of determining what needed to be replaced and it worked fine. Maybe some thing clogged the intake or a thermal switch somewhere? I am baffled.

I have found that many times that if i have a power surge or if my ac water strainer gets clogged the ac compressor will shut down. The blower will work, but the compressor will not come on.If i turn the unit off and come back a couple hours later it all works again. It must be a safety built in to protect the unit.Every time it happens i think the 25 year old ac is shot and i am going to have to check the wife and kids into a hotel to wait for parts then i come back and thankfully it fires up.

When I treid to fire it up the amp gage went up to 40+ amps. Thought I was going to fry the gen. Tried it acouple times and it did not do anything but amp up to 40+ amps. Mike

Mine did the same thing and it was the cap. Because of the high amp draw I was certain it was the compressor. It was just the cap. Charlie

Hi, We are brand new to the Bertram world as of this afternoon. [:D] We just bought a 1981 33' sportfish. Needs some love, but still a very nice boat. Since this is an AC topic, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good generator? The original one on our boat is gone, but the AC works with dock power just fine.

Welcome & Congrats on your purchase! The sportfish is a nice model. Are you looking for new or previously exercised (used)? Also, is your boat gas or diesel? If gas, I just so happen to have a nice gas 6.5kw onan in good running condition for sale. I'm repowering to diesel. It's located in Maryland, just south of Balitmore. you can e-mail me if intersted: johndunker@yahoo.com br, John John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Welcome Rissa! There are only 3 brands of gas generators that I know of and that is Kohler and Westerbeke and Onan.I think they are all three pretty equal and good.If you use your ac a bunch then 6-7kw is normal if you do not require as much power than a 5kw is fine.I have a Kohler 7.4 and am happy with it.
