Doug's Re-power
Gave it another shot tonight. Both mains started up and ran fine. Idle speed (800rpms) was just under 6 knots. Docking is pretty easy with these babies. As Doug C. says, "Neutral is a good gear!" Still having some issues though. The exhaust manifold on the rebuilt (port) motor had a crack that did not show up under pressure testing. Doug C. now thinks that the after-cooler may have been what caused this motor to over-heat and trash cylinders 1 and 2 the summer before last. He'll order a new one tomorrow and we'll give it another try next week. Thanks Al. I know Doug C, will make everything right. You are correct though, it is a bit frustrating. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Well Doug C. finally got everything put back together. We went out for the sea-trial on Friday night. In this case, 3rd time was a charm. Boat ran very well. We had 2/3's fuel, full water, and 6 P.O.B. The motors idle at 800rpm and the boat does about 5.5 knots at idle in gear. Pretty much the numbers were what the other 300/315 6BTA guys are getting: 2200rpms 21-22 knots 2300rpms 22-23 knots 2400rpms 23-24 knots 2500rpms 24-25 knots 2600rpms 25-26 knots 2700+rpms* 28.5 knots Currently, the boat was only turning a little over 2700rpms at WOT. As this was the first time running the engines up, Doug C. still has to confirm no-load WOT and adjust the tachs. He thinks the tachs are probably a little off and will work to confirm it this week as I've told him I want the boat to hit 2900rpms fully loaded. Yesterday, after taking my Dad for his annual father's day breakfast on the boat at Manchester-by-the-Sea, I went out for a short cruise. I filled the tank @ Manchester Marine ($2.75 per gallon). With full fuel, 2/3 water (I generally never travel with more than 1/2 a tank of water anyway), and 7 people on board I was still getting 23 knots @ 2400rpms. Took a run up to Gloucester. On the way back, it took me 28 minutes to go from the Gloucester no-wake zone to the Salem harbor no wake zone. If Doug C. can confirm that the tachs need to be adjusted, I'll be very happy with these results. If the tachs are OK, I'll probably take an inch of pitch out of my 21x22 3 blades, and knock out a little of the cup (currently a med cup). I'll be sure to keep everyone up to date. Doug, We were out yesterday & I also did a WOT run. With full fuel, water & two POB, NITES OFF was only able to get up to just under 24 kts. It definitely is a nice ride at 22 kts. Just don't know if there are enough gas docks out there to keep me going at that speed. Enjoy the new power. Al

Just a quick update. Doug C. verified that the tachs were working correctly, so he adjusted the high idle on the starboard motor as it was only turning up to 2900rpms at no load WOT. Per everything I've read on boatdiesel, I told Doug I wanted it bumped up to 3100-3150. We wound up setting it at around 3150rpms. The port motor is around 3050rpms at no load WOT. We also adjusted the idle on the port motor so they now both turn 800rpms at idle. This gives me about 700rpms in gear (5.5-5.8 knots). While I was initially nervous about docking with such a high idle speed, I can't get over how much easier it is to dock the boat (not that it was hard before). While we were doing this, we did notice the source of an oil leak I was having. Cummins gives you several places on the block to setup the dipstick. All of the holes not being used are plugged. When Doug sent the block out, one of the holes was not plugged on the outboard side. It is now. Anyway, I went out last night to see how the adjsutments had worked. It was blowing pretty good. Against the wind, at WOT the starboard motor was pulling 2900rpms, and the port motor was around 2750rpms. Speed was just under 29 knots. With the wind, the starboard motor was still at 2900rpms and the port was right at 2800rpms. Speed was just under 30 knots. Since Doug has to come down to replace the block heater on the port engine, I am going to have him bump up the high idle on the port motor to 3150rpms. I'm confident this will give me 2900rpms on the port motor. I'm guessing this will give me a final top speed of 29.5-30.5 knots. Slowly but surely things are coming together. I get pretty much the same as you Doug.. as Buzz says.. the engines, trans and props are "square".. you get about 1 knot per 100 RPM. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Well Doug C. and I bumped up the high idle on the port motor last night to around 3150rpms at no load WOT. Unfortunately, there has been a pea soup fog over Mass for the last 2 days so we couldn't go out and test it. This should get me pretty close to 2900rpms on both motors at WOT under load.
