Window tinting
Window tinting
I just got back from Cabo and I sure liked the look of all of the sportfishing boats with tinted windows. Is it possible to tint the clear glass that is in my 35' or do I have to replace all of the glass if I want the dark tinted look? I am assuming that normal auto tinting would not last too long in a marine environment, but I have never looked into it. I am chomping at the bit right now, as my boat, which I have owned for 45 days and never started, should be done soon. My new tank should be in by the end of the week, just in time for tuna season. I think you can tint it the way it is right now, assuming of course that you clean the glass. You may want to get in touch with Tim Kieseleski (aka Thudd) from the 31 site as he owns a glass company. Mike, you can do it yourself or have the local tint shop do it. My had been done and I found the receipt from the mid 90's and it was $400. The fron and sides are so dark you can hardly see in in the daytime. The only down side is at night you can't steer from the lower helm too well. John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Have a auto tint company do it. It will hold up well on the interior of the boat. I forget my boat doesnt have the tint like the old boat did. Gotta remember to stop running around in my underwear. Mike... Here in sunny hot NC many boats have tinted windows.. using the sticky backed film that I suspect auto glass people use. When I bought "Phoenix" I thought some glass was cracked, when I looked closer I found that glass was OK, it was the film that had developed a few wrinkles. I have no idea when the stuff was applied, but I would not be surprised it it has been there for perhaps 10 years. I am in the process of removing the film now because it has several wrinkles, has shrunk a little so edges are clear, but also it made it so dark inside it was dismal. I would go to a good auto glass shop locally and speak with them. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Hi Guys... I had my windows tinted several years ago by an Auto tinting place. They used 3M tint and it was self adhearing (not sticking) He throughly cleaned the windows and sprayed a very weak water/soap solution on the windows. Then just sqeegeed it from the center of the film out towards the edges. I'm on the boat now looknig from the inside-outside and it seems very bright but from the outside looking in it looks much darker. It has held up great. No scratches or wrinkles..and was very reasonably prced. He also did the 2 plexi-glass doors on my electric panel...so you can't se all the switches ect. I'm in Westbrook, Connecticut and if anyone is interested I can find his name and the old box with the extra he gave me to find out which tint he used. Also my FUEL TANK has ***t the bed. I can't even draw fuel up from the tank and next week I'll remove the pick up port at the top of thetank to see if I can see anything down at the bottom. Are we still talking about ethanol and fiberglass fuel tanks in Bertrams here ??? or is that topic been beat to death. Everyone have a great summer !!!
