Genny Location
I have a 79 35. When I bought the boat 4 years ago the generator was under the cockpit and complety shot and rusted. I installed a new genny but put it under the salon. I'm about to repower and I'm wondering if I should move it back under the cockpit. With a noise shroud and the hatches draining overboard I wonder if it would last just as long under the cockpit as under the salon and free up some engine room space. On the other hand, replacing the heavy 555s with lighter 370s will the boat run stern heavy with less weight up front and perhaps should I leave it where it is. Is the boat designed from a weight distribution aspect that this should be a concern? Anyone go thru this same process or have any comments?
On my '72 B35, the batteries and ac units were moved to the area in front of the motors and above the fw tank, then gen is in the original cockpit location. I feel that my boat rides a little bow heavy and suspect the redistribution of weight has something to do with it. I'd say in general, weight furhter aft would be better than weight fwd. The 370's should povide a good turn of speed and compensate for any sluggishness due to a stern heavy boat. Unless you wouldn't be able to more the gen after the motors are put in, I'd leave it where it is and see how the boat handles. Now if the reason for moving is too much noise from the gen in the cabin, I'd say move it. As for life of the gen under the cockpit, I'd say with a little tlc there wouldn't be much difference. Though if the boat is fished hard and the cockpit gets awash with saltwater then keep it in the salon and compensate for the weight another way. I know a B38 owner who moved the gen to the engine room and put a 100gal freshwater tank under the cockpit, essentially swaping locations but not changing weight distribution. Good Luck, John

That sucks. You Florida boys are getting pushed out all over the place! Something needs to change before its too late! Can the Cummins rep for your area recommend someone, even if you have to travel a couple of hundred miles to get it done?
