Insurance woes
Pete - I hope so - it's a job that both Al & I don't wish on anyone ! Are 8.1's that much cheaper than a rebuilt set of diesels ? You might want to do an analysis between the two before moving ahead. I re-powered w/ new 454's in 2000, but they were $8K each (w/ trannies) and dropped right in. But the 8.1's are right up there and I think we can help you find some rebuilt D's. Thank for the tip rick but i wanted gas because i worked on a diesel charterboat for several years and i would get so sick from the fumes. Even when im on a friends diesel that are clean yanmars i still get yucky (till the bites on)or theres a breeze. Its funny but sometimes i hold my breath till i get on the other side of the boat.

Travelers has been nice enough to insure me once again. I thought they might be upset that I paid 1,100 last year and they paid 95,000. I increased the "agreed value" to $140,000 because of the diesels, and my bill will be $1,300 a year. Hope I don't need them again, but nice to know they're there. I just got a call from a friend with a gas powered 86 FBC. He was insured by Zurich. He just got a certified letter saying they were dropping him. This is pretty much what I was worried about. All these a$$hole$ have finally suceeded in screwing us. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Travelers sent me my bill and it actually went down to just under $1,000 a year. Mind boggling to actually see a bill go down! Doug, Did the letter say they were dropping him because of ethanol related liabilities?? Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

I just got a quote from AllState (I have my residence and a few rental properties insured with them) and the quote is for 100,00 agreed value (based on a recent survey) price was 2500 with a 1000 deductible and 2100 with a 500 deductible. I have a friend getting me a quote through travelers as well.
Bill, I'm not sure exactly what the letter said. Hopefully he will chime in. I got the bill for my old policy through One Beacon the other day. For and agreed value of $133K (I bumped it up for the diesels), a 2% ded, $10K in medical payments, $500K in uninsured boater, and $1 million in liability, it was $2200. The same coverage on my new policy (actually I have a hull value of $140K now) with Travelers was just under $1200. Hi doug and bill, Awhile ago i had a problem with ZURICH insurance. I was insured with them for a few years and last fall my agent told me that they no longer wanted to insure my bertram and a sheet about any plastic product holding gasoline would not be an insurable item . They really didnt dump me with an explanation but that letter was pertaining to the glass tank. My agent got me HEGARTY classic boat insurance for i think about 100 dollars less with the same coverage. That was 1200 dollars now

Thats a good deal Pete, if all the insurance companies dump us, Im sure Capt Ed will figure out a way for us to start our own insurance company! No worries. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

You got that right! When you add up how much we all pay in annual premiums, vs. the loss pay outs we would be better off as a mutual insurer. That is how USAA started, USAA's founders were just 25 Army officers who agreed to insure each other in 1922. The grew to become a Fortune 200 financial services company with $96.1 billion in owned and managed assets and more than 5.5 million members. Because USAA is not a publicly traded company, they don't answer to stockholders – they answer to the policyholders. Here in Florida when hurricanes come and they tell us to evacuate, Florida residents stay, its the insurance companies that evacuate.

I like that idea. What happens if four of us loose our boats in one big hurricane though? Also, would the banks accept that insurance... I didn't pay cash for my boat. I'd like to explore this more if anybody else is interested, it would have a be a fair size group to work of course. I think I paid $3600 last time around, and I don't remember what the deductible is but it's big and was also doubled for windstorm loss. My boat is in a protected harbor and I take really good care of her when the weather turns bad, the big windstorm rate isn't deserved. More danger of her sinking from something stupid like a malfunctioning head I think, but perish the thought Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com
