Heading for a repower
Heading for a repower
Well, I'm in the final stages of deciding to repower. It was an easier decision to buy the boat than to pull a perfectly good running set of motors. What's pushing over the edge to repower is a pretty good deal on a set of motors and the pending problems/cost of gas. The motors are reman 3126's 420hp which are being pulled for a repower with completely new C7 cats with all the latest and greatest. So does anybody have an experience with the 3126's in a B35 or these motors in general. Thanks, John John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

John, I could be wrong, but I believe that the 3126 is the electronic version of the 3116 (which did not have the best of reputations). Your best bet is to head over to boatdiesel.com to get the full story. They are a heavily built in-line 6. I think 420hp would be good for the 35. John, Are the re-manned 3126's substantially less $$ than the fatory re-manned 5.9's from Cummins? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Get a price from Tom DeMann Marine Power, he is in N.C. but will ship anywhere(no sales tax!). He gives great quotes and is happy if he makes 5-6 hundred on each engine he sells. He's more about volume and not trying to hit a homerun on every sale. He is a Cummins Dealer 910-791-6222. Already a member at boatdiesel, a couple of years now. The 3126's are mechanical and a different than the 3116's. From what I gather from what's been posted is that initially there were problems (valve/injector) and CAT has addressed them. Also, it's better to run them 400 or more off the top rather than the 200 off top recommended for the high cruise. Good or not, this deal is for these motor’s is from the place where I’ll be doing the re-power and though the price for the motors may not be the cheapest but the total at the end will more than make up for it. From talking to other B35 owners with 370 hp diesels I’m thinking that the 420’s should give me 25-27kt cruise at 2400 rpms. Heck I’d be happy to cruise at 20-22kts. Of course sea condition plays a part as well. The prop calculator on boat diesel shows 34kts as top end, that may get a little hairy. In the next week or so I’ll be finalizing the deal so stay tuned. If all goes well I’ll have some gasser motor’s and parts available. br, John John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Don't believe everything the prop calculator tells you. Also, if I'm not mistaken most of the guys running 370's are running the Cummins 5.9 which weighs much less than the 3126. Either way, it'll be like night and day when you're through. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. How will servicing the Cats be in your area? Doug, You're right on about the calculators, while I like what I see on paper proof will be in the water. I've also heard that as a B35 handles better in the mid 20k range than it does in the upper 20k/30k range. I don't know because my gas boat won't go that fast even at WOT. The yard I'll be doing the work at is a CAT dealer/service and since I live in the Chesapeake and will be mostly in the Mid-Atlantic area I shouldn't have a problem with service. For basic stuff I have a friend of the family who's a diesel mechanic, mostly heavy equip but still could answer my questions. The big thing will be for me to become familiar with diesels and how to care for them. Aren't you in the middle of a repower? How are things going? br, John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

John, Things are going well. The motors/trans are in an all lined up. There's still a lot to do, but as I'm on the North East there's no rush. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Well I stopped to see the motors Sat before heading to the AC Boat show. They've been pulled from the donor boat, a 40' Ocean the Yard is redoing as a promotional (read write-off)boat. I'm getting the 7.5kw genset too it only has 700hrs and runs good, but is being replaced since motors are out anyway. While at the AC Boat show I talked with pretty much all the diesel mfg and discussed the strong point of their motors. In the end I came away convinced that I was on the right track for me. Considering the cost of motors and more importantly the level of support for the conversion, new just isn't in the cards. The motors look in decent shape and are the mechanical ones weigh about 1500 w/o trans not much more than 6bta if I remember right. I plan to send them to the rebuilder in April some time. They will completely rebuilt the bad motor (new block/head whole 9yds) the other will be completely checked and serviced. I'll be specifically interested in the condition of the turbo's, injectors and valves. I'll also begin looking for a set of 1.5:1 tranny's, the package comes with 2:1 and I'd rather have the lower ratio. The best part is that I'm on my own schedule for doing the work and finding the parts. A key to the success of this will be keeping the conversion focused on what must/should be done and avoiding what I'd like to do (no autopilot this year…). Here's a short list of what I'll have available for sale/swap. - 2 Crusader 454's decent shape with tranny's - 1 Onan 7.5kw Gen ('94 vintage) My running gear and gauges may be spoken for by the PutInTake (the shed I'll use to get some the stuff I'll need), but if anybody needs any 1-3/8" stuff let me know. -jd John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Mike, I sent you an e-mail. I kind of fell into this repower and hadn't thought or prepared to sell anything, but maybe we could work something out. btw, is your boat still in Cheasapeake city? (or do I have you mixed up with someone else. John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD
