Great Boat Available

Post by smithmk913 »

After 18 years of ownership, we have decided to sell our '87 33 FBC. Keys Boat Works, Marathon, has been sold and will be developed as condos. Our fantastic covered slip won't be available after mid '07. With this change, we had to be honest about slip availability. Rentals limited, and dockominiums starting at $200+ K. Most yards and marinas converting to upscale condos. Reasonable boating in the Keys just will not be affordable. All I can tell you is that it is a great boat. From "Sparkling" gelcoat to special "at production" teak interior-it's just special. It's well equipped for fishing with Rupp riggers, and we took extra care of interior to look and feel comfortable. We're also realistic about selling a 20 year old gas boat. Brokers who want to list say it's about an $80,000. asking. We will be in Captiva this weekend with pictures to provide any interested party with info on the "So Far-So Good". Would appreciate passing this information along to those who are looking for this kind of opportunity. Want you to know this isn't easy. Regards, Mike Smith smithmk913@aol.com 317-965-3322

I feel for you Mike. Mine is For Sale too. Basically for the same reasons. We have no Marina here at all. You get a private dock or head North or South. Cant afford a house on the water at 2M +. But if I keep it I'll have to throw in another 40K for repower too. Right now both engines are running great after infusing another 1500 into them. I listed it 2 weeks ago. Gene Dugan

Mike and Gene, What an awful reason to have to sell. Its too bad its not like it is up North where you at least can have the option of putting your boat on a mooring. From everything I've been reading its becoming quite an epidemic down there. I must admit that I take my marina and winter storoge fees for granted. Good luck. I hope you can get what you're looking for. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Sorry to hear that guys. It must be on the minds of a lot of boaters in Florida. The way things are going between the cost of insurance and cost of slippage, the only boats in Florida are going to be either trailerable boats or mega yachts for the rich. It' the end of an era in a way.. Sad. I can't help but think that we're all going to be thinking that way some day, hopefully it's a long way off.

Mike, I looked for your boat on yachtworld, but could not find it. Are you listing it privately? Gene, I believe this one's yours: http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/ ... 64851&url= Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

I have seen Mikes boat. The condition of it is flawless due to the fact that it has been under cover for most of its life. The fiberglass is like new . It is going to be a real find for someone due to its condition. I have not seen Genes boat but I am sure it is flawlessly maintained as well. I feel bad for you guys because you have had your boats for so long. I have only had mine for 2 years and cannot imagine not having it other than the fact that it is draining on the wallet. It is for sure a hobby that keeps getting more expensive. I am starting to re-think Bertram Pride now since you both are riding with me on the lunch cruise to Cabbage Key.I hope the ailment that you two have, is not catchy...lol

We were waiting for actual sale of boat yard to take place. Ya never know! It did. Have several potential buyers looking in the next 30 days. After that will give to Richard Bertram, Miami. They've got a great facility up the Miami River by factory/airport. Reasonable monthly rent for covered storage, and you can do your own cleaning/maintenance while it's being shown. No matter how good the boat, it's difficult to get buyers to come the 3 hrs. south to Marathon to look. Miami location works for showing, and Richard Bertram just loves to sell good old Bertrams-plus Miami Boat Show traffic in February. Been led to believe that Europeans will buy and quickly ship abroad. Less than $100 K for a great boat is too much to pass on. Just have to find a buyer that appreciates the quality and condition.

I don't expect to sell too quickly. I'm in no panic to sell it. I have the interior torn up again. Trying to remedy the mess the previous owner did to the wood. I can talk to you wood working masters this weekend. I told the broker not to take a picture of the interior, because it hasn't been cleaned up since the last trip. At least he cold have done was show that $1700 mattress! Mike, I did call some of my friends at Allied/Richard Bertram. They just wanted big yachts, so they threw me over to a guy they like at Denison Yacht Sales. Got to admit he was up here in a hour from Lauderdale. Seemed egar, but no pressure. Left me a contract that I sat on for a few days. Gene Dugan

Gene, I was going to email you about the interior. It shouldn't be too hard to clean it up on the cheap and dirty. I did my interior teak this past spring. First I washed it down with TSP, lightly sanded it with 220 grit, then vacuumed it and hit it with a tack rag. Finally, I applied 2 coats of cetol. It came out great and really wasn't very difficult. Thanks Doug, I got all the stuff , and I'll find a spot that doesn't show, and see if I can get it looking like it should and go from there. Went to Captiva for the "Bertram Pride" weekend. Had just a fantastic time. A great bunch of people, and Tim and Ed did a great job organizing everything. Saw lots of thing on other boats, that I'd like to do to mine. Like stealing Tim's engines, and Robert's windlass. Gene Dugan

I saw your boat on yachtworld. She is a beauty! Sorry to hear about the boatyard being sold. The same thing is happening up here in VA too. A marina/ boatyard down the river from me recently sold for $5 million to a condo devloper who plans to build a 100 Million dockuminum complex over there. He has got to get the city to re-zone it first. We are all hoping that the city council will deny it due to the massive opposition to the project. Rob C.
