Fresh Water Tank Replacement

Post by swilczynski »

Hello all, it has been a while. Thanks to Dave S, I am able to get back into the site.

Have a leak down low in my 70 gallon fresh water tank in my '91 33 SF.

Wondering if I need to cut it up to remove it, and also what folks have replaced it with.

Appreciate any input.

Side note, can anyone tell me how to attach a photo in my signature?

Hi Scott,

Unless you want to open the hatch extension, it's a lot easier to cut up the old tank with a Sawzall. Believe it or not I've done it both ways. The first time I took apart the dinette and opened the extension. Since I has one small hole leaking, I just had it repaired at a metal shop. But sure enough about 4 or 5 years later it leaked again.

So I didn't bother doing the same the second time around. I just cut up the old tank and went with the Ronco B545. It's 55 gallons but I haven't missed the extra 15 gallons. https://ronco-plastics.com/product/wate ... ding-tank/

It's fits like a glove through the hatch on my '85 SF and I think yours is the same. I can send you the drawing that I used if you'd like. One thing that I added to the new one was a 4" inspection port. A nice wide hole at the top that makes it super easy to drain & clean. When I get a minute I'll look at how to post pic's here again and see if I can get it up here.

Why do you FBC guys need to prove some sort superior sexuality ? Is it because you're driving around in a station wagon instead of a sports car ?

Always fun Doug !

Not sure if you've heard but Ticket is under contract. It still needs to pass sea trials and all that but I have a deposit and she's gone come this May if all goes well. Time to get into an express of some sort. Looking at Tiara 31's - 36's....unfortunately the 37 won't fit in my slip. But it's slim pickings these days. I'll stay in touch no matter what, still a long way to go.

My brother just "gave away" his 31 Tiara. It was a nice boat. So much lighter than the Bert....it flew with similar power. I'm actually thinking about selling. It's time. Good luck with everything Rick. Hope you don't disappear from the site.

Thanks Joe !

It'll be tough to get rid of me, too many friends and too much knowledge here. Whoever buys our boats are getting a deal as they are all in great shape and absolute battlewagons in rough sea's. When I look at the all the improvements I've made I know the boat will be delivering for many Summer's to come.

The thing is I still do not have any problem getting up the bridge but I'm going into my late 60's and know that I won't forever. So like you say, it's time to do something.

I'm still looking at Carolina Classic's, Cabo's and all the other expresses but I really like the Tiara 36. A guy just told me about one last night right here in Falmouth that is in "showroom" condition, but it's a '85 so I have to go check out his version of showroom. Guess it's got the 3126's which I think is a little scary too.

Rick,,
Don’t be afraid of those 3126’s Have them surveyed and if they turn out fine maintain them well and never look back. I have 3116’s that run like a charm. If you need a Cat guy I have one.

I do not have the HUEI injector system. Injector pump drives the system. I have had both engines timed which is not a job any normal diesel guy can do. You need a special tool (expensive) and the knowledge on how to do it. This service does not have to be done often maybe every 3500 hrs (thank goodness). If you happen to change an injector or two It would probably need to be done.

Thanks Tony,

It doesn't sound like the Huei is perfect either...a lot of pressure in there. I'm sure you're well up on it but this guy does a good job (and he's kinda funny) explaining the differences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IA45Yyfaw8U&t=296s
