Catching baits hook or net

Post by lwrenn »

What is your prefered method for catching live baits? I still like the one throw and go with the 12'net, but I am starting to have bait mortality issues with netted baits. Nice photo, thats some skill to throw a 12 footer. Up here in the northest, its pretty much by hook. With careful handling mortality is not an issue. I only use the cast net in the canyons for squid.

A lot of guys use cast nets for poggies, but by the time we buy them, they're dead. To be any good good, they've got to be still wiggling. If dead over 12 hours, they're useless. We'll chunk them when fishing for stripers. Haven't heard of any other method of catching bait. Good form on the cast....do you hold a piece of the net in your mouth before throwing ? Look mom all my teeth are still there, no nets in mouth. Loading the net on shoulder and split the net into thirds and throw like a discus from the hip to the shoulder. It will open to a perfect twenty four foot circle. ps I was tuaght to throw with end in mouth but there is a better way. I'm still throwing, but a smaller net. i have a herniated disk in my neck and it is very painful to throw a large net, so I got one of those nets with the ring that I can throw with my right arm. Not real productive, but it works. I use oatmeal and gold hooks too. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC 2007 8.1 Crusaders
