Enclosng flybridge
I ma thinking about enclosing my flybridge in plexiglass and getting rid of thte isenglas. Has anyone done this? Ideas? DAvid
I've never heard of anyone using plexiglass. Do you have a hard top or Bimini top? If you have a hard top you may want to look into EZ2CY. I thought about EZ2CY when I had my enclosure done. Because you can't roll it up, opening it on my boat would have been a problem. I went with Strata Glass which will last a long time if you keep it clean. Buzz

I've got a bimini enclosure and had it completely redone with ez2cy across the front and fwd 1/6 of each side, the rest stata glass. That was 4 yrs ago and all still looks great. The ez2cy added about $1800 to the cost and was well worth it. I've got a square center panel in the front that can be unzipped and zips into roof of the bimini, either side has u-zips in the strata glass. The cost of my enclosure was about as much as a decent hard top alone and I exped to get another 6-10 yrs out of it. I have been very, very impressed with strata glass and highly recommend it. Another option would be an acrylic called Barret, like ez2cy, maybe a little less. Both can be bonded into an enclosure to fit a bimini so you don't have to have a hard top, you just can't roll them up. Now if you're talking plexiglass like you might get from Home Depot, I don't think it would work too good, scratches easily and hard to fasten in place. If you're talking about something like they put on a new 67footer, I don't think it would look very good on a smaller boat, but that's me and not you. Good luck with your choice and let us know what you think. br,

I agree with Doug, and would not recommend it due to the size of the panels. I have successfully used a Plexiglas material for an enclosure on my last boat. It was an express style and the panels where much smaller, you could hardly tell they where installed. You have to use a special material (I cannot think of the name at the moment) that will not yellow in sunlight, most Plexiglas will only last 1 -2 years in sun before turning yellow. Mine was still perfect after 10 years when I sold it, no yellow and no scratches.

I also need to start thinking about replacing the enclosure. Are you saying the strata glass can be rolled up and EZ2CY cannot? Will these last longer than 20 or 30 gauge material? I really could use some help with this one because I feel clueless as to what is the best way to go. Thanks Scott 1987 B33 SF Dealer's Choice V Edisto Beach, SC

Speaking of enclosures...I have a half tower with a sunbrella covering and want to have a 4 sided enclosure for the flybridge with sunbrella and 30 guage eisinglass(sp). I'm also looking to add a sunshade shade like a half bimini over the cockpit. I got a bid for $2500, bbut don't know if that is a reasonable price...any advice? Strataglass can be rolled, though I would make it so the front and sides swing up rather than rolling it. Rolling it will scratch it. EZ2CY cannot be rolled. EZ2CY is fantastic, but very expensive. I have a 4 sided stratglass enclosure. This will be my seventh season with it and it still looks great. Strataglass is more expensive than eisenglass, but I think its worth it.
