Genset problem

Post by Reelsalty »

Just acquired an 1982 35 Bertram. It’s an awesome boat but I have a problem with the generator. It’s seems that when the fuel tank gets below half full the generator runs out off fuel. I thought it might be the the pick up tube tube but according to the Bertram diagram everything shares the same tube. If anyone has had a there tube out or thoughts about why this is happening I would appreciate a response Thanks

Hi there & welcome. On my 33 there is only one pick-up tube and the top portion has a "manifold" with 3 ports; one for each engine & the 3rd for the Geny. This manifold also has 3 anti-siphon valve fittings. I'd start there to make sure the valve going to the Geny is operating correctly and not sticky. Next,a clogged or dirty fuel filter or weak fuel pump may be the cause if your main engines aren't giving you any problems under half full. I'd temporarily wire in an electric pump and see if that solved the problem then work from thereafter checking the anti-siphon valve.

Thanks Joe I didn’t know about the valves so I will start there.
