my real point is I have had both and when my diesel engines had a problem it was no doubt much more expesive to fix than gas

my 2 cents if you will. No doubt the diesels perform better. I would venture to guess the average repair on a diesel is much more and that annual maintenance is more expesnsive. I am goiung to go ahead and jinx myself here. I have run at least 1000 gallons through my tank on my 78. I did put a very fine micron double canister filter before the merc filter. Apparently according to PMY the only tanks that will have problems are tanks with DIOP in the resin. Apprently it is more rpevenlent in the pre 80 Tanks. Boy it sure would be nice to have someoen tell us if teh resin used to make our tanks has DIOP.

My guess is it would not be cheap mught be worth checking into. Are you going with stainless because of the sketchy info to do with ethanol's effect on aluminum.
